Casi coincidentes con la aparición de la llamada Nueva Canción Latinoamericana, los primeros poemas musicalizados de Mario Benedetti se conocieron a inicios de los años setenta del siglo pasado. Pero, más allá de que el autor y muchas de sus composiciones iniciales mantuvieron claros puntos de contacto éticos y estéticos con aquel movimiento y sus cultores, Benedetti nunca fue un miembro formal de esa corriente. Sin renunciar a la toma de posición ante las urgencias políticas, que marcó buena parte de la relación entre poesía y música de ese entonces, el poeta uruguayo –al igual que otros valiosos creadores– supo trascender los límites del compromiso más inmediato para construir un cancionero donde lo humano es el punto intemporal de partida y llegada. Este no fue, en modo alguno, un camino sencillo o libre de los tropezones que toda obra artística padece. Muy especialmente en casos de autores tan prolíficos como lo fue Benedetti. Un repaso histórico de la interacción música-literatura; el análisis contextualizado de la obra “musical” de Benedetti; y el testimonio de quienes colaboraron con él o eligieron musicalizar su poesía, reafirman su estatura de creador coherente con su lugar y su tiempo, pero despojado de ataduras de época o perspectiva. El exhaustivo recuento de los registros discográficos que incluyen sus textos poéticos, interpretados por múltiples artistas de distintas épocas y procedencias, es otro elemento que fortalece esta percepción. Tal cual sucede con sus novelas, poemarios y cuentos, las anteriores son razones de peso para comprender por qué, todavía hoy, el mensaje de las canciones del autor de La Tregua atraviesa fronteras generacionales y geográficas sin perder su capacidad de comunicar y conmover. Porque a pesar de cosechar incontables reconocimientos, lectores y oyentes, decidió mantener su modesta y sensible figura de Grillo constante.
