This book explores the links among ecology, disease, and international politics in the context of the Greater Caribbean - the landscapes lying between Surinam and the Chesapeake - in the seventeenth through early twentieth centuries. Ecological changes made these landscapes especially suitable for the vector mosquitoes of yellow fever and malaria, and these diseases wrought systematic havoc among armies and would-be settlers. Because yellow fever confers immunity on survivors of the disease, and because malaria confers resistance, these diseases played partisan roles in the struggles for empire and revolution, attacking some populations more severely than others. In particular, yellow fever and malaria attacked newcomers to the region, which helped keep the Spanish Empire Spanish in the face of predatory rivals in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. In the late eighteenth and through the nineteenth century, these diseases helped revolutions to succeed by decimating forces sent out from Europe to prevent them.

Los orígenes, la construcción y el triunfo del Estado-nación han sido objeto de minuciosos estudios que han dado lugar a amplios debates. En las ciencias sociales, ha sido especialmente controvertida la periodización de las rupturas revolucionarias, así como el análisis de las continuidades y permanencias. Para Hispanoamérica, este proceso revolucionario se confundió con las independencias de los antiguos territorios de la monarquía española. En los procesos de construcción de los nuevos Estados, se puso el foco en el hecho insurgente más que en el revolucionario. Costó mucho tiempo apellidar como liberal a esta revolución política y social, igual que sucedió en la Europa del siglo xix. Este libro plantea que la puesta en marcha del liberalismo gaditano en México provocó cambios revolucionarios que se materializaron en la coyuntura de 1820 a 1835. Para llegar a esta conclusión, se analiza el proceso de descomposición y quiebra de la monarquía absoluta desde el último tercio del siglo xviii. Se propone una novedosa periodización de la construcción de un Estado en la que se insiste en el incesante legado y profundo influjo que llegó a tener la Constitución de 1812 en sus principales estructuras políticas, militares y fiscales. Por último, se afirma que el federalismo mexicano fue revolucionario. Mientras en la década de 1820 las clases dominantes regionales apoyaron un sistema de participación popular amplio, en la de 1830 acordaron al unísono frenar la participación popular en ayuntamientos, milicias cívicas y procesos electorales, y se pusieron de acuerdo para acabar con el federalismo. Tras la guerra, la tempestad. Reformismo borbónico, liberalismo doceañista y federalismo revolucionario en México (1780-1835) ofrece al lector un análisis de los distintos liberalismos que construyeron el Estado-nación mexicano, a saber, el gaditano, el federal revolucionario y el moderado.
