La present obra recull les lliçons que s'imparteixen a l'assignatura de Composició II a l'Escola d'Arquitectura de Barcelona i ofereix un cert recorregut per la teoria de l'arquitectura occidental en el període comprés entre el renaixement i el començament del segle XX. Resseguint els textos més significatius d'aquest ampli període, el nostre escrit vol ser un indici del pacient i apassionat treball de reflexió i crítica a partir del qual i per camins sovint estranys i tortuosos han pogut néixer algunes de les concepcions sobre l'arquitectura que encara sustentem. Pere Hereu (Girona, 1941) és catedràtic d'universitat del Departament de Composició Arquitectònica de l'Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB). S'ha dedicat amb preferència a l'estudi de l'arquitectura del segle XIX i començament del XX. Ha publicat Vers una arquitectura nacional (Barcelona, 1987), Elies Rogent. Memòries, viatges i lliçons (Barcelona, 1990) i Arquitectura i ciutat a l'Exposició Universal de Barcelona 1888 (Barcelona, 1988). És coautor dels llibres Elies Rogent i la Universitat de Barcelona (Barcelona, 1988) i Gaudí i el seu temps (Barcelona, 1990) i de l'antologia Textos d'arquitectura de la modernitat (Madrid, 1994).//

En aquesta obra es planteja un recorregut per l’arquitectura europea de l’era de la revolució industrial a través del que fou l’element clau del debat arquitectònic de l’època: l’estil. A partir de la preocupació dels arquitectes vuitcentistes de trobar “un estil propi del segle” es va desgranant l’origen i l’evolució dels diferents estils arquitectònics des de l’època de la il•lustració fins a l’Anglaterra victoriana, passant per la França napoleònica, els regnes de Prússia i Baviera, i la Viena imperial, descobrint, d’aquesta manera, com l’estil no fou una preocupació únicament formal, una moda banal, sinó que darrere de la tria d’unes formes gòtiques o renaixentistes, gregues o barroques, s’amagava la concepció social, política i històrica del comitent, ja fos un particular, ja fos el govern d’una nació. Paral•lelament a la qüestió de l’estil s’aborda el tema no menys important de la renovació tipològica, imposada pels canvis socials i tecnològics, que va exigir un esforç important per part dels arquitectes de l’època que van haver d’inventar nous tipus d’edificis, adaptats a les noves necessitats i aprofitant les noves possibilitats que la revolució industrial oferia, tasca que ha quedat amagada sota l’epidermis decorativista de les construccions, i que sovint la historiografia moderna de l’arquitectura no ha volgut reconèixer. En resum, a través d’aquestes línies es posa en relleu la necessitat de valorar i d’entendre l’arquitectura de l’historicisme i l’eclecticisme més enllà del tòpic i del prejudici i es convida el lector a mirar-la amb nous ulls i a entendre-la com el fruit d’una època de canvis i revolucions a partir dels quals es va anar configurant la nostra societat contemporània

La Catalunya medieval va ser una terra de castells i el castell del Temple de Barberà de la Conca constitueix un bon exemple de l'evolució de les fortaleses catalanes, des del començament de la seva construcció a mitjan segle xi. Arribats al segle xii, el castell, juntament amb el districte que hi estava associat, va passar a ser propietat de l'orde del Temple i, un cop extingit aquest, va passar a mans de l'orde de l'Hospital. Aquests ordes constitueixen els exemples més representatius de les institucions religiosomilitars creades en el marc de les croades que es van establir a la Catalunya medieval, on van disposar d'extenses propietats. Aquest estudi fa un repàs a la història del castell del Temple en el període medieval. Es presenta l'evolució de l'arquitectura i es relaciona amb l'evolució de la societat, amb els successius propietaris que posseïren la fortalesa i amb la incidència que va tenir sobre la comunitat pagesa establerta a la seva vora. Amb l'ajut de reconstruccions virtuals de l'arquitectura, del mobiliari que hi va haver i fins dels personatges que hi van fer estada, l'autor proposa l'acostament del lector a l'edat mitjana catalana.
