Rendering the suffering of the marginalized visible has been an important aspect of feminist sociological studies of health, illness and medicine, with the subjective experience of those without access to institutional power being at the forefront of the research. This volume analyzes the links between the suffering caused by the intentional violence of war and the unintentional suffering engendered by modern medicinal processes. By establishing a fitting tribute to the academic and campaigning work of Meg Stacey, Global Perspectives on War, Gender and Health responds to her challenge of ’why medical sociology had not yet turned its gaze upon the health consequences of war’. A selection of international case studies are used to create a volume of significant interest to sociologists and those working in the fields of anthropology, social policy, social work, peace, war and security studies, and international development.

Refugee camps are typically perceived as militarized and patriarchal spaces, and yet the Sahrawi refugee camps and their inhabitants have consistently been represented as ideal in nature: uniquely secular and democratic spaces, and characterized by gender equality. Drawing on extensive research with and about Sahrawi refugees in Algeria, Cuba, Spain, South Africa, and Syria, Fiddian- Qasmiyeh explores how, why, and to what effect such idealized depictions have been projected onto the international arena.

Carlos Castaneda's books are accepted as truthful by millions of Spanish speakers, probably because most of them have not read this Spanish translation of Professor Fikes' book, Carlos Castaneda, Academic Opportunism and the Psychedelic Sixties. Dr. Fikes published this book in 1993 in Canada, after completing years of research in Mexico and the United States. Now two Spaniards, Juan Samper and Lourdes Escario, have translated Fikes' book without payment, convinced that it is valuable for everybody. Carlos Castaneda's central claim, to have learned sorcery from an elderly Yaqui Indian named don Juan Matus, is contradicted by Professor Jay Fikes' evidence. Fikes'

The Sahrawi and Afghan refugee youth in the Middle East have been stereotyped regionally and internationally: some have been objectified as passive victims; others have become the beneficiaries of numerous humanitarian aid packages which presume the primacy of the Western model of child development. This book compares and contrasts both the stereotypes and Western-based models of humanitarian assistance among Sahrawi youth with the lack of programming and near total self-sufficiency of Afghan refugee youth in Iran. Both extremes offer an important opportunity to further explore the impact which forced migration and prolonged conflict have had, and continue to have, on the lives of these refugee youth and their families. This study examines refugee communities closely linked with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and a host of other UN agencies in the case of the Sahrawi and near total lack of humanitarian aid in the case of Afghan refugees in Iran.

The Routledge Companion To Migration Literature written by Gigi Adair and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-30 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Routledge Companion to Migration Literature offers a comprehensive survey of an increasingly important field. It demonstrates the influence of the “age of migration” on literature and showcases the role of literature in shaping socio-political debates and creating knowledge about the migratory trajectories, lives, and experiences that have shaped the post-1989 world. The contributors examine a broad range of literary texts and critical approaches that cover the spectrum between voluntary and forced migration. In doing so, they reflect the shift in recent years from the author-centric study of migrant writing to a more inclusive conception of migration literature. The book contains sections on key terms and critical approaches in the field; important genres of migration literature; a range of forms and trajectories of migration, with a particular focus on the global South; and on migration literature’s relevance in social contexts outside the academy. Its range of scholarly voices on literature from different geographical contexts and in different languages is central to its call for and contribution to a pluriversal turn in literary migration studies in future scholarship. This Companion will be of particular interest to scholars working on contemporary migration literature, and it also offers an introduction to new students and scholars from other fields. Derivative Lives written by Virginia Newhall Rademacher and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

The title of this book, Derivative Lives, alludes to the challenge of finding one's way within the contemporary market of virtually limitless information and claims to veracity. Amid this profusion of options, it is easy to feel lost in spaces of uncertainty where biographical truth teeters between the real and the imaginative. The title thus also points to the prolific market of biographical novels that openly and intentionally play in the speculative space between the real and the fictional. Drawing on theories of risk and uncertainty, Derivative Lives considers the surge in biofiction in Spain and globally, relating literary expression to concepts such as circumstantiality, derivatives, speculation, and game studies.
