El estudio del tesoro de Torredonjimeno (Jaén) cierra el ciclo en torno a la orfebrería visigoda que se había iniciado hace unos años con la publicación del tesoro gemelo de Guarrazar (Toledo), dos ocultamientos excepcionales, únicos y sorprendentes, no sólo por la riqueza de las joyas que contenían, sino por las circunstancias, en muchos aspectos coincidentes, de su hallazgo y posterior desmembración. Compuesto actualmente por 35 cruces de diversos tipos, completas o reconstruibles, y casi un centenar de fragmentos de otras, acompañados por colgantes, cadenas y macollas, contuvo en su momento al menos dos coronas reales, que se deducen únicamente por las letras que pendían de las diademas ya desaparecidas, sin que se sepa con certeza el nombre de los soberanos que las ofrecieron a una iglesia dedicada a las santas sevillanas Justa y Rufina, y que se ocultó en circunstancias poco claras hacia el 711, o poco más tarde de la invasión árabe. El estado fragmentario en el que se encontraron las joyas, allá por 1926, y el continuado proceso de deterioro que sufrieron, tuvo la única ventaja de hacer poco rentable su salida del país, como había ocurrido con Guarrazar, aunque hoy es necesario recorrer tres museos españoles para contemplar al completo el conjunto conservado: Museo de Arqueología de Cataluña (Barcelona), Museo de Arqueología y Etnología de Córdoba y Museo Arqueológico Nacional (Madrid). Si la leyenda cubrió Guarrazar con el atractivo velo del misterio, Torredonjimeno no se libró de un proceso mitificador que se ha intentado esclarecer aplicando métodos científicos a su estudio por parte de un equipo interdisciplinar de arqueólogos, historiadores y físicos. Con ello se completa un programa de investigación que tuvo por finalidad dar a conocer al público interesado una parte importante de nuestro patrimonio histórico y arqueológico.
