Entre su prolífica obra, además de las dos obras clásicas que reunimos en este volumen, destacan El vendedor de naranjas, El mal amor, El mar y el tiempo, El ascensor de los borrachos, La Puerta del Sol, La cruz y el lirio dorado, Oro y hambre y Capa y espada. En 1977 obtuvo el premio Lope de Vega por su obra teatral Las bicicletas son para el verano y en 1995 recibió el premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes en reconocimiento a una vida dedicada a la cultura.
