The rapid growth in communications and internet has changed our way of life, and our requirement for communication bandwidth. Optical networks can enable us to meet the continued demands for this bandwidth, although conventional optical networks struggle in achieving this, due to the limitation of the electrical bandwidth barrier. Flexgrid technology is a promising solution for future high-speed network design. To promote an efficient and scalable implementation of elastic optical technology in the telecommunications infrastructure, many challenging issues related to routing and spectrum allocation (RSA), resource utilization, fault management and quality of service provisioning must be addressed. This book reviews the development of elastic optical networks (EONs), and addresses RSA problems with spectrum fragment issues, which degrade the quality of service provisioning. The book starts with a brief introduction to optical fiber transmission system, and then provides an overview of the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), and WDM optical networks. It discusses the limitations of conventional WDM optical networks, and discusses how EONs overcome these limitations. It presents the architecture of the EONs and its operation principle. To complete the discussion of network architecture, this book focuses on the different node architectures, and compares their performance in terms of scalability and flexibility. It reviews and classifies different RSA approaches, including their pros and cons. It focuses on different aspects related to RSA. The spectrum fragmentation is a serious issue in EONs, which needs to be managed. The book explains the fragmentation problem in EONs, discusses, and analyzes the major conventional spectrum allocation policies in terms of the fragmentation effect in a network. The taxonomies of the fragmentation management approaches are presented along with different node architectures. State-of-the-art fragmentation management approaches are looked at. A useful feature of this book is that it provides mathematical modeling and analyzes theoretical computational complexity for different problems in elastic optical networks. Finally, this book addresses the research challenges and open issues in EONs and provides future directions for future research.

Optical Fiber Telecommunications Vib written by Ori Gerstel and has been published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-11 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This chapter introduces elastic optical networking, which is a new paradigm for the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) layer, based on a much more flexible use of the spectrum without a rigid wavelength grid, transponders that can be programmed for different modulation formats, tightly packed channels in a so called “superchannel” and impairment-aware control planes that tie the client layer and the optical layer together. We start by reviewing the changes in network usage patterns that require an overhaul of the network architecture. We then survey the enabling technologies, including flexible spectrum reconfigurable add/drop multiplexers (FlexSpectrum ROADMs), bit rate variable transponders (also known as software defined), and control plane capabilities. We provide a vision of the resulting architecture, including how to decide on the connection bit rate and other properties and how to manage the spectrum, and compare it to today’s WDM systems. We finish by surveying progress in standards for this technology.

Statistical Capacity Sharing And Virtualization In Survivable Elastic Optical Networks written by Fahim Arefin Khandaker and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Network performance (Telecommunication) categories.

With the exponential growth of internet traffic, elastic optical network has gained popularity due to its flexible nature. Introduction of various bandwidth-hungry applications require dynamic provisioning and switching of connections based on the user demand. In statistical capacity sharing, spectrum resources can be shared between multiple connections. With the support of statistical capacity sharing, connections are able to switch to different rates according to requirement. However, Routing, Modulation format selection and Spectrum allocation (RMSA) is a challenging task in a statistically shared elastic optical network. Survivability is another important issue in elastic optical networks. It becomes more challenging when statistical sharing is introduced in to the network. In this work, we address statistical capacity sharing in elastic optical networks. We also consider virtualization of elastic optical network in this work. Our objective is to minimize blocking probability of a connection request to be admitted in to the network. We also intend to increase the probability of an existing connection request of achieving higher rates. First, we study the problem of statistical capacity sharing for static elastic optical networks. For a given set of connection requests, we design an analytical model in order to calculate the probability of achieving higher rates when a connection request demands for a higher rate. Our goal is to evaluate the degree of statistical sharing supported by the network. Next, we study the problem of RMSA in statistically shared elastic optical networks. We require an admission control policy in order to efficiently utilize limited network resources. Spectrum management is also a necessary step since the connection requests keep changing their line rate requirement over time. Spectrum must be allocated and re-allocated carefully. We evaluate for two line rates, base rate and each rate. Our objective is to minimize connection blocking and peak rate blocking. We then introduce survivability in elastic optical networks where statistical sharing is supported. The problem is to decide whether to provide protection to base rate only or both base rate and peak rate under capacity constraint. In our study, we only focus on base rate protection, while minimizing the base rate and peak rate blocking. Finally, in a different study, we investigate virtual optical network (VON) mapping problem. We introduce spectrum and modulation format convertible regenerators for efficient VON mapping and RMSA. We propose heuristic algorithms in order to minimize network blocking probability. Our proposed algorithms can achieve lower blocking probability by utilizing spectrum and modulation format convertible regenerators.

Analysis Of The Spectrum Occupancy In Elastic Optical Network written by Joel Caba Oriola and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.

Elastic Optical Networks were proposed in response to the large capacity and diverse traffic granularity of the future Internet. Depending on the bandwidth requirements, EONs allocate an appropriate-sized spectrum to each connection. This new scheme breaks with the traditional WDM networks which uses static connections. Nevertheless, these networks resources are poorly used under dynamic traffic condition. This thesis proposes a hybrid scheme where resources are allocated both in a static and dynamic manner. It also pretends to give a solution to the principal drawback of the hybrid scheme, the inability to absorb random connection request peaks.

Elastic Optical Networks (EON) is widely accepted today as the next step in the evolution toward high capacity networking. The idea behind it is to optimize the use of resources by flexibly assigning spectrum, data rate and modulation format adapted to the needs of the end-to-end connection requests. This book is devoted to the study of three important issues in EONs, 1) dynamic source aggregation of sub-wavelength connections, 2) correlation between traffic granularity and defragmentation periodicity and 3) using spectrum fragmentation to better allocate time-varying connections.
