"An analytical round robin for the elastic-plastic analysis of surface cracks in flat plates was conducted with 15 participants. Experimental results from a surface crack tension test in 2219-T8 aluminum plate provided the basis for the inter-laboratory study (ILS). The study proceeded in a blind fashion given that the analysis methodology was not specified to the participants, and key experimental results were withheld. This approach allowed the ILS to serve as a current measure of the state of the art for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis. The analytical results and the associated methodologies were collected for comparison, and sources of variability were studied and isolated. The results of the study revealed that the J-integral analysis methodology using the domain integral method is robust, providing reliable J-integral values without being overly sensitive to modeling details. General modeling choices such as analysis code, model size (mesh density), crack tip meshing, or boundary conditions, were not found to be sources of significant variability. For analyses controlled only by far-field boundary conditions, the greatest source of variability in the J-integral assessment is introduced through the constitutive model. This variability can be substantially reduced by using crack mouth opening displacements to anchor the assessment. Conclusions provide recommendations for analysis standardization. Wells, D. The second phase of an analytical round robin for the elastic-plastic analysis of surface cracks in flat plates was conducted under the auspices of ASTM Interlaboratory Study 732. The interlaboratory study (ILS) had ten participants with a broad range of expertise and experience, and experimental results from a surface crack tension test in 4142 steel plate loaded well into the elastic-plastic regime provided the basis for the study. The participants were asked to evaluate a surface crack tension test according to the version of the surface crack initiation toughness testing standard published at the time of the ILS, ASTM E2899, -13, Standard Test Method for Measurement of Initiation Toughness in Surface Cracks under Tension and Bending. Data were provided to each participant that represented the fundamental information that would be provided by a mechanical test laboratory prior to evaluating the test result. Participants were asked to interpret the test according to E2899, including evaluation of crack-front constraint, determination of a critical initiation angle along the crack front, determination of the deformation regime of the test, and determination of the critical J-integral value. The choice of finite element analysis constitutive models and treatment of the stress-strain data was left to the discretion of the participants. The hope was that this process would familiarize participants with the standard and provide the task group with very helpful feedback regarding the interpretation of the requirements as they are written. Overall the participants' test analysis results were in good agreement and constructive feedback was received that has resulted in an improved published version of the standard E2899-15.

For many materials the fracture strength and fatigue lifetime is controlled by small cracks that can grow at sizes and applied stress levels which are below those predicted from data for long cracks. The objective of this paper is to describe how elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis can be used to interpret small crack behavior. The results of the elastic-plastic analysis indicate that deviations from LEFM begin at about 0.7 of the yield stress and that the trend of the small crack data can be predicted. The results of 3-D elastic-plastic analysis of a surface crack show a unique variation of the crack driving force along the crack front. This information is used to predict crack shapes during cyclic crack growth.

No closed form solutions exist for the elastic-plastic J-integral for surface cracks due to the nonlinear, three-dimensional nature of the problem. Traditionally, each surface crack must be analyzed with a unique and time-consuming nonlinear finite element analysis. To overcome this shortcoming, the authors have developed and analyzed an array of 600 3D nonlinear finite element models for surface cracks in flat plates under tension loading. The solution space covers a wide range of crack shapes and depths (shape: 0.2 less than or equal to a/c less than or equal to 1, depth: 0.2 less than or equal to a/B less than or equal to 0.8) and material flow properties (elastic modulus-to-yield ratio: 100 less than or equal to E/ys less than or equal to 1,000, and hardening: 3 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 20). The authors have developed a methodology for interpolating between the goemetric and material property variables that allows the user to reliably evaluate the full elastic-plastic J-integral and force versus crack mouth opening displacement solution; thus, a solution can be obtained very rapidly by users without elastic-plastic fracture mechanics modeling experience. Complete solutions for the 600 models and 25 additional benchmark models are provided in tabular format. Allen, P. A. and Wells, D. N. Marshall Space Flight Center NASA/TP-2013-217480, M-1356

In this work, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics (EPFM) methods are extended to study the behavior of surface cracks. The material used is a tungsten inert gas (TIG) welded 2219-aluminum alloy, welded with 2319 weld wire. Calibration and a crack-growth test were performed. A multiple specimen R-curve technique was used. A group of specimens with the same initial crack geometry was tested to different deformation values. Several different groups were considered. Crack extension as a function of position along the crack front was determined and digitized into data files. A method to estimate values of the J integral as a function of position is presented. Local resistance curves were obtained. A parameter to characterize constraint is proposed. It is only based on the elastic solution for G. It is shown that the slopes of the resistance curves are uniquely related to the constraint parameter for all cases considered.
