'Elastic Rock' is an appraisal of jazz-rock in Europe during its most vibrant period, 1968-1980. One of its principal aims is to throw light on an often neglected aspect of European jazz and rock history. Another is to promote the view that the jazz-rock produced in Europe during the period still has much to offer the modern listener and, in some instances, stands apart from the familiar American models. The major part of the coverage consists of an A-Z survey of 400 bands from across the continent, East and West. Here, we consider each band's take on the genre via an account of its best recordings. Fairly well-known groups are covered as well as many obscure bands that existed for only a short time and/or whose music had very limited circulation. In a number of cases, there are entries on groups that failed to release a record at the time but whose work has become known via airshots, private tapes and so forth. Preceding the A-Z are sections on the rise of jazz-rock, its defining features and sub-genres. The book concludes with a chapter on jazz-rock's decline in the '80's and partial rehabilitation in the '90's and beyond. There is also a brief discussion of its prospects in the present age as well as a list of 101 Essential European Jazz-Rock albums. The book is written in an accessible style and is aimed at both seasoned jazz-rockers and newcomers to the genre.

It concludes with a list of 51 Essential Jazz-Rock albums from the three regions. A Smörgåsbord of Sound is a survey of modern jazz in Scandinavia between the years 1949 and 1980. Its main section is an A-Z of 76 musicians and bands from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and America who helped to establish and develop the music in the region. Key recordings are assessed and the principal aim is to argue for the music's significance and pleasure-giving potential in the current age. A central claim is that Scandinavian jazz eventually departed from the American model and created its own highly distinctive forms. A Smörgåsbord of Sound is written in an accessible style with little in the way of complex terminology and is aimed at experienced modern jazz fans as well as younger readers wishing to get a handle on the music. It concludes with a list of 52 essential albums.

In its open improvisations, lapidary lyrics, errant melodies, and relentless pursuit of spontaneity, the British experimental band Henry Cow pushed rock music to its limits. Its rotating personnel, sprung from rock, free jazz, and orchestral worlds, synthesized a distinct sound that troubled genre lines, and with this musical diversity came a mixed politics, including Maoism, communism, feminism, and Italian Marxism. In Henry Cow: The World Is a Problem Benjamin Piekut tells the band’s story—from its founding in Cambridge in 1968 and later affiliation with Virgin Records to its demise ten years later—and analyzes its varied efforts to link aesthetics with politics. Drawing on ninety interviews with Henry Cow musicians and crew, letters, notebooks, scores, journals, and meeting notes, Piekut traces the group’s pursuit of a political and musical collectivism, offering up its history as but one example of the vernacular avant-garde that emerged in the decades after World War II. Henry Cow’s story resonates far beyond its inimitable music; it speaks to the avant-garde’s unpredictable potential to transform the world.

In this first book-length study of chindon-ya, Marié Abe investigates the intersection of sound, public space, and sociality in contemporary Japan. Chindon-ya, dating back to the 1840s, are ostentatiously costumed street musicians who publicize a business by parading through neighborhood streets. Historically not considered music, but part of the everyday soundscape, this vernacular performing art provides a window into shifting notions of musical labor, the politics of everyday listening and sounding, and street music at social protest in Japan. Against the background of long-term economic downturn, growing social precarity, and the visually and sonically saturated urban streets of Japan, this book examines how this seemingly outdated means of advertisement has recently gained traction as an aesthetic, economic, and political practice after decades of inactivity. Resonances of Chindon-ya challenges Western conceptions of listening that have normalized the way we think about the relationship between sound, space, and listening subjects, and advances a growing body of interdisciplinary scholarship that examines the ways social fragmentation is experienced and negotiated in post-industrial societies.

"This study examines the historical development, social, political and economic significance of gospel music in Zimbabwe. It approaches music with Christian theological ideas and popular appeal as a cultural phenomenon with manifold implications. Applying a history of religious approach to the study of a widespread religious phenomenon, the study seeks to link religious studies with popular culture. It argues that gospel music represents a valuable entry point into a discussion of contemporary African cultural production. Gospel music successfully blends the musical traditions of Zimbabwe, influences from other African countries, and music styles from other parts of the world."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Resounding International Relations written by M.I. Franklin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-23 with Political Science categories.

This book explores a provocative area of inquiry for critical theory and research into world politics and popular culture: music. Not just because political science barely engages with anything musical, but also because it is clear that many opportunities for critical scholarship and reflection on global politics and economics are present in the spaces and relationships created by organized sound. It is easy to focus on the textual elements of music, but there is more at stake than just the words. Critical reflection on the intersections between music and politics also need to take into account the visceral and non-verbal elements such as counterpoint and harmony, polyphony and dissonance, noise, rhymes, rhythms, performance and the visual/aural dimensions to music-making.
