Excerpt from Electrical News, 1919, Vol. 28: Generation, Transmission and Application of Electricity The reason' for the smaller energy consumption with the higher rate of acceleration and braking is that the motor rnan operates for less time on the resistance points of the controller. There is also less energy dissipated in the brake shoes as well as in the resistors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Electrical News, 1920, Vol. 29: Generation, Transmission and Application of Electricity The final solution of this traction-problem will not be found in any franchise granted by the city council, no mat ter what its terms may be. The experience of the majority of the other states of the Union clearly points to the one logical thing to do, and that is to place traction companies under the control Of a state public utilities commission. Minnesota already has a railway and warehouse commis sion that could be given enlarged powers to supervise the traction companies of the state. The records of our neigh bor state, Wisconsin, and many Others who have followed this plan, proves conclusively that this method of handling public utilities is far superior to that of municipal control. The situation in Minnesota, with Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth served by one traction corporation, makes it especially desirable to utilize this state commission plan. This will do away with all local franchise granted by city councils and will give the greatest assurance for adequate service. The city councils lay their demands before the state commissions and the tract-ion companies present their side of the case, and this judicial commission employs the services of the very best engineers and auditors, and their decisions are usually in the best interests Of the public. Electric Power written by Clément M. Lefebvre and has been published by Nova Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents new and important research on electric power and its generation, transmission and efficiency. The world is becoming increasingly electrified. For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks.

This accessible text, now in its Second Edition, continues to provide a comprehensive coverage of electric power generation, transmission and distribution, including the operation and management of different systems in these areas. It gives an overview of the basic principles of electrical engineering and load characteristics and provides exhaustive system-level description of several power plants, such as thermal, electric, nuclear and gas power plants. The book fully explores the basic theory and also covers emerging concepts and technologies. The conventional topics of transmission subsystem including HVDC transmission are also discussed, along with an introduction to new technologies in power transmission and control such as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). Numerous solved examples, inter-spersed throughout, illustrate the concepts discussed. What is New to This Edition : Provides two new chapters on Diesel Engine Power Plants and Power System Restructuring to make the students aware of the changes taking place in the power system industry. Includes more solved and unsolved problems in each chapter to enhance the problem solving skills of the students. Primarily designed as a text for the undergraduate students of electrical engineering, the book should also be of great value to power system engineers.
