Electrical plants on-board modern cruise ships, offshore rigs and other naval vessels have nowadays reached a size and complexity comparable or even superior to big industrial plants and power plants. The continuous increase of the size of ships and the widely accepted adoption of electrical propulsion has led to the installation of HV (MV) power generation and distribution plants of very high power, tens of MW. Everybody who plans, manages or services these complex on-board power plants nowadays must have knowledge as well of HV plants and electrical machines, power converters, protection relays, of control and automation systems. This book intends to be an overview of technical features and planning issues of these electrical plants. It is meant to bear general validity, even if it is focused on larger ships with HV plants and electrical propulsion.

Excerpt from The Electric Propulsion of Ships Much attention is now being given to propositions relating to the electric propulsion of ships. A study of the circumstances reveals a remarkable accordance of means and requirements. The case may be briefly outlined as follow's: - The double transformation of energy in the form of work into energy in the form of electricity and again from electricity into work, may often, when the operations are on a large scale, be effected at an overall efficiency of 90 per cent, and even higher. In other words, at the cost of a loss of 10 per cent, in energy and of the initial and maintenance cost of the electrical machinery, engineers can interpose an electric drive between the prime mover and the machinery to be driven. The object of interposing an electric drive is to obtain advantages of flexibility which will permit of securing greater efficiency both in the prime mover and in the driven machinery, which, in the case of ship propulsion, is the propeller. Further great advantages relate to the superior means of control rendered available with electric drive. In the case of ship propulsion, the prime mover has, until recently, almost always been a reciprocating engine. But during the last ten years, many ships have been fitted with steam turbines. As applied to ship propulsion, the steam turbine has not met with any approach to the almost unqualified success which has attended its use on land. This is chiefly because, in applying the steam turbine to ship propulsion, it has been necessary to adopt speeds several times lower than have been customary with land turbines. This has been necessary owing to the well-known circumstance that the efficiency attainable with the screw propeller is lower (for a given power) the higher the speed of revolutions. It was a realization of this circumstance, more than any other consideration, which first led to serious propositions for the electrical driving of large ships. Excerpt from Electric Ship Propulsion It is assumed that the readers of this volume will have an elementary knowledge of the theory of steam turbines, electric generators, induction motors, etc.; it would not be possible to treat all these subjects adequately in a book of this kind. An attempt has been made to cover as thoroughly as possible the special points that arise in connection with the propulsion of ships by electricity and to compare this method with others that are already in use or projected. Where use is made of apparatus that has not previously been thoroughly described in existing text-books, a full description of it is given. The author wishes to thank Messrs. Maxwell Day, E. F. W. Alexanderson, A. H. Mittag, W. C. Watson and Eskil Berg of the General Electric Company, Messrs. W. Sykes, W. E. Thau and M. Cornelius of the Westinghouse Company and Commander J. S. Evans, U. S. N., of the Navy Department for their assistance in the preparation of this book; also Marine Engineering and Shipping Age for the use of an article by Renwick Z. Dickie in the March, 1920, issue on "Diesel Electric Propulsion"; also the American Institute of Electrical Engineers for the use of an article by George B. Pulham in the January, 1920, issue of the Journal on the Wulsty Castle; also the American Society of Naval Engineers for the use of an article by Lieutenant W. R. Carter in the August, 1916, issue of the Journal on "The Ljungstrom Turbine." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Electric Boats And Ships written by Kevin Desmond and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-21 with Transportation categories.

Electric propulsion for boats was developed in the early 19th century and--despite the advent of the internal combustion engine--continued with the perfecting of the modern turbo-electric ship. Sustainable and hybrid technologies, pioneered in small inland watercraft toward the end of the 20th century, have in recent years been scaled up to create integrated electric drives for the largest ocean-going vessels. This comprehensive history traces the birth and rebirth of the electric boat from 1835 to the present, celebrating the Golden Age of electric launches, 1880-1910.

This book describes the history and development of marine power plant. Problems of arrangement, general construction and parameters of marine power plants of all types are considered. It also introduces different characteristics of each type of marine power plant, matching characteristic for diesel propulsion. The book gives a clear idea about different marine power engines, including working principle, structure and application. Readers will understand easily the power system for ships since there are a lot of illustrations and instructions for each of the equipment. This book is useful for students majoring in “marine engineering”, “energy and power engineering” and other related majors. It is also useful for operators of marine institution for learning main design and operation of ship plants.
