In many areas of geophysics, geology, geochemistry, and mining, there is considerable interest in laboratory data on the physical properties of various types of rocks. Until recently, how ever, only the mechanical properties of rocks had been studied in detail. The last few years have seen a relatively large amount of study of the electrical properties of rock samples and a need to organize the results of these studies has arisen. In"Electrical Properties of Rocks,"* E. 1. Parkhomenko reviewed and cataloged studies of electrical resistivity and the dielectric constant in rocks. In the present work she covers other electrical phenomena which are observed to occur in rocks and minerals and reviews the re sults of her own researches, as well as that of others, previously published. Theoretical and experimental data on the piezoelectric prop erties of minerals and rocks obtained since 1953 by E. 1. Parkho menko and myself as the result of laboratory investigations on quartz-bearing rocks (granite, gneiss, quartz veins, etc. ) comprise the bulk of the monograph (Chapters1-4). Itwas not previously con sidered that a polycrystalline mass such as a rock could exhibit piezoelectric properties - it was supposed characteristic only of single crystals.

Soil science is perhaps one of the oldest practical sciences, having been of concern to man probably from the time he progressed from a strictly preda tory life to one in which agriculture became important. In view of the anti quity of concern with the subject, it is perhaps surprising that it can be approached from a fresh viewpoint, as is done in this book. Because soil science is an applied science, it is not surprising that the approach is usually descriptive, rather than imaginative. For agriculturalists and other land users, perhaps the most important part of soil science is the description of soils and the capacities of such soils to maintain crops, and this is reflected by the fact that soil science is usually treated ima highly descriptive manner, with soil classification being one of the main efforts. The treatment of the subject from a geological point of view, with considerable emphasis on the evolution of soils and the reasons governing their composition and form, makes this a highly readable book. Books on soil science are timely, with present-day concern with such major problems as the pollution of our environment and the possibility of overreaching our capacity for producing food for an expanding population.

Bubbles of hydrogen and methane carry soil radon, the main ionizer of surface air, into the surface atmosphere. As a consequence of ionization, light ion pairs are formed that determine the polar conductivity of the surface air; light ions’ aggregation with neutral condensation nuclei gives heavy ions, primarily responsible for the atmospheric electric field. As such, the density of hydrogen and methane subvertical flows will determine local electrical characteristics of the surface atmospheric air. Geological heterogeneities, deformations, and seismic and hydrogeological activity can change the density of hydrogen and methane flows. This book brings together extensive material from field observations to illustrate the possible use of atmospheric-electrical monitoring to solve problems of applied geophysics.

I was very happy to learn that Plenum Press has decided to publish an English edition of Chemistry of the Ionosphere. Although the book was largely intended for the Soviet reader in order to fill some gaps in Russian-language reviews on aeronomic problems, I hope that it may be useful to foreign specialists engaged in iono spheric research as well. Naturally, during the time which has elapsed since the preparation of the Russian edition new studies have been published in the world literature on the problems dealt with in this book. The most important of these are noted in the ap pendix to this edition, but some problems (for example, with respect to the physics of negative ions in the lower ionosphere) require a radical reexamination, which cannot be done in a brief appendix. I will be pleased if publication of the book in English will as sist in removing some of the currently existing ambiguities in basic problems of upper atmosphere chemistry. A. D. Danilov Preface to the Russian Edition 1 In the last decade surprising successes have been achieved in the study of the earth's upper atmosphere by use of rockets and artificial satellites. These investigations have made it clear that the upper atmosphere (and particularly the ionospheric region at altitudes 100-1000 km) is a considerably more complex formation than could be visualized prior to the advent of active studies with space vehicles.

CRC Practical Handbooks are a series of single-volume bench manuals that feature a synthesis of the most frequently used, basic reference information. These highly abridged versions of existing CRC multi-volume Handbooks contain largely tabular and graphic data. They provide extensive coverage in a scientific discipline and enable quick, convenient access to the most practical reference information...on the spot! Leading professionals in their respective fields collaborated to provide individuals and institutions with an economical and easy-to-use source of classic reference information. The CRC Practical Handbook of PHYSICAL PROPERTIES of ROCKS and MINERALS, prepared by leaders in their specialties, has been constructed to serve as a convenient, compact, yet comprehensive source of basic information. The technical data have been compiled and selectively edited to provide an organized and definitive presentation of the physical properties of rocks and their constituent minerals. The format is primarily tabular and graphical, for easy reference and comparisons. There is also instructive textual material to present, explain, and clarify the data. This edited and abridged version of the CRC Handbook of Physical Properties of Rocks, published in three volumes in 1982 - 1984, will serve as an easy-to-use source of current and useful reference information.
