Any book under this title which creates both anticipation and anxiety must be the work of a lot of people, present any new findings with objectivity and cover the subject as exhaustively as possible. As such, it must cover the possible reproducible mechanisms of action/reaction EMF-Biological Organism, the appropriate models that allow quantitative measurements, the basic biological reproducible effects and possible therapeutic effects along with their prevalent metrics and international exposure criteria. This is exactly the main objective of this book. It is also believed that it provides some new results and conclusions which complement, clarify and verify the existing results in the literature included in the references [1] and [2]. Electromagnetic Radiation is a form of energy, which is transmitted in the form of waves which correspond to spatial and time variations of the electric and magnetic field. Electromagnetic fields appear in a vast set of frequencies (spectra) that are divided in frequency zones, according to the manner they are produced or used. Areas greater than 300 gigacycles (GHz), which include the solar spectrum, as well as x and gamma rays, have been studied sufficiently under a different angle in relation to possible biological effects. People are well aware of the harmful effects of sun radiation when they are exposed to the sunlight for extended periods of time and of the catastrophic effects of nuclear bombs and nuclear reactor leaks.

A numerical method is presented to determine electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of rectangular enclosure with apertures on its wall used for input and output connections, control panels, visual-access windows, ventilation panels, etc. Expressing EM fields in terms of cavity Green's function inside the enclosure and the free space Green's function outside the enclosure, integral equations with aperture tangential electric fields as unknown variables are obtained by enforcing the continuity of tangential electric and magnetic fields across the apertures. Using the Method of Moments, the integral equations are solved for unknown aperture fields. From these aperture fields, the EM field inside a rectangular enclosure due to external electromagnetic sources are determined. Numerical results on electric field shielding of a rectangular cavity with a thin rectangular slot obtained using the present method are compared with the results obtained using simple transmission line technique for code validation. The present technique is applied to determine field penetration inside a Boeing-757 by approximating its passenger cabin as a rectangular cavity filled with a homogeneous medium and its passenger windows by rectangular apertures. Preliminary results for, two windows, one on each side of fuselage were considered. Numerical results for Boeing-757 at frequencies 26 MHz, 171-175 MHz, and 428-432 MHz are presented.Deshpande, M.D.Langley Research CenterELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS; PENETRATION; ELECTROMAGNETIC SHIELDING; APERTURES; METHOD OF MOMENTS; CAVITIES; ENCLOSURE; INTEGRAL EQUATIONS

This book reflects contributions from experts in biological and health effects of Radio Frequency (RF)/Microwave and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) used in wireless communications (WC) and other technological applications. Diverse topics related to physics, biology, pathology, epidemiology, and plausible biophysical and biochemical mechanisms of WC EMFs emitted by antennas and devices are included. Discussions on the possible consequences of fifth generation (5G) mobile telephony (MT) EMFs based on available data and correlation between anthropogenic EMF exposures and various pathological conditions such as infertility, cancer, electro-hypersensitivity, organic and viral diseases, and effects on animals, plants, trees, and environment are included. It further illustrates individual and public health protection and the setting of biologically- and epidemiologically-based exposure limits. Features: Covers biological and health effects, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, reproductive effects of mobile phones/antennas (2G, 3G, 4G), cordless phones, Wi-Fi, etc. Describes effects induced by real-life exposures by commercially available devices/antennas. Illustrates biophysical and biochemical mechanisms that fill the gap between recorded experimental and epidemiological findings and their explanations. Explores experimental and epidemiological facts and mechanisms of action. Provides explanations and protection tips. Transcends across physical, biological, chemical, health, epidemiological, and environmental aspects of the topic. This book is aimed at senior undergraduate/graduate students in physics, biology, medicine, bioelectromagnetics, electromagnetic biology, non-ionizing radiation biophysics, telecommunications, electromagnetism, bioengineering, and dosimetry.

Brain stimulation technologies are both tools to probe brain function and to provide therapeutic options for patients with neuropsychiatric disease where pharmacological options are not viable. Although the field has been in existence for over seventy years, research interest in brain stimulation has been on the rise particularly in the last two decades. Brain Stimulation: Methodologies and Interventions is an introduction to the field of brain stimulation technology and its applications. The book explores how brainstimulating technologies work in the context of brain pathways that mediate normal and abnormal brain function. Chapters cover neuroanatomy and activity dependent changes in neuronal function triggered by brain stimulation, as well as applications of brain stimulation technologies themselves, including noninvasive procedures that rely on convulsive or seizure therapeutics, and non-convulsive therapies such as magnetic and electrical brain stimulation. Authored by an international group of leaders in the field, Brain Stimulation is a valuable resource for both neuroscience researchers and clinicians.

This book contains up-to-date information on the state of the art of research and applications in electro- and magnetorheology. A total of 130 papers are presented in four sections. The first section is devoted to the various applications of ER and MR fluids, like polishing, microfluidics, vibration control, robots, shock absorbers and dampers, MR and ER valves. The second part deals with the experimental characterization as well as the theoretical prediction of the mesostructure resulting from field-induced phase separation. The dynamics of phase separation is also included in this section. The third section is about the material properties; it includes papers on new compositions of ER or MR fluids, polymer blends, magneto- or electroactive elastomers and gels. The last section, about physical mechanisms, presents experiments and theories on the rheology of the fluids and its connection with microhydrodynamics and the structure of field-induced aggregates.
