A time-reversal mirror is, roughly speaking, a device which is capable of receiving an acoustic signal in time, keeping it in memory and sending it back into the medium in the reversed direction of time. In this paper, we employ an accurate numerical method for simulating waves propagating in complex one-dimensional media. We use numerical simulations to reproduce the time-reversal self-averaging effect which takes place in randomly layered media. This is done in the regime where the inhomogeneities are smaller than the pulse, which propagates over long distances compared to its width. We show numerical evidence for possible use of an expanding window time-reversal technique for detecting anomalies buried in the medium.

Time reversal is a general technique in wave propagation in inhomogeneous media when a signal is recorded at points of a device called time reversal mirror, gets time reversed and radiated back in the medium. The resulting field has a property of refocusing. Time reversal in acoustics has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically. In this thesis we consider the problem of time reversal of electromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous layered media. We use Markov process model for the medium parameters which allows us to exploit diffusion approximation theorem. We show that the field generated by the time reversal mirror focuses at a point of initial source inside of the medium. The size of the focusing spot is of the kind that it is smaller than the one that would be obtained if the medium were homogeneous meaning that the super resolution phenomenon is observed.

Abstract: Time-reversal (TR) was originated in acoustics as a technique for re-focusing waves around their source location. Under certain conditions, the wave equation is invariant under TR, therefore, waves emanated from a source or scattered from a passive target, and recorded by a transceivers array, will retrace their forward path and automatically focus at the source/target location if back propagated in a time-reversed (last-in first-out) fashion from that array. Focusing resolution of time-reversed back propagation in rich scattering environments beats that in free space, yielding what is known as 'superresolution'. Moreover, under ultrawideband (UWB) operation, TR exhibits the distinctive property of 'statistical stability', which makes it an attractive technique for imaging in disordered media whose characteristics are not known deterministically (random media). Over the past few years, TR has been exploited in a variety of electromagnetic sensing and imaging applications such as ground penetrating radar, breast cancer detection, nondestructive testing, and through-wall imaging. In addition, TR has been extensively applied in UWB wireless communication providing myriad of advantages including reduced receiver complexity, power saving, increased system capacity, and enhanced information secrecy.

The choice of topics in this book may seem somewhat arbitrary, even though we have attempted to organize them in a logical structure. The contents reflect the path of 'search and discovery' followed by us, on and off, for the in fact last twenty years. In the winter of 1970-71 one of the authors (C. A. ), on sah baticalleave with L. R. O. Storey's research team at the Groupe de Recherches Ionospheriques at Saint-Maur in France, had been finding almost exact symme tries in the computed reflection and transmission matrices for plane-stratified magnetoplasmas when symmetrically related directions of incidence were com pared. At the suggestion of the other author (K. S. , also on leave at the same institute), the complex conjugate wave fields, used to construct the eigenmode amplitudes via the mean Poynting flux densities, were replaced by the adjoint wave fields that would propagate in a medium with transposed constitutve tensors, et voila, a scattering theorem-'reciprocity in k-space'-was found in the computer output. To prove the result analytically one had to investigate the properties of the adjoint Maxwell system, and the two independent proofs that followed, in 1975 and 1979, proceeded respectively via the matrizant method and the thin-layer scattering-matrix method for solving the scattering problem, according to the personal preferences of each of the authors. The proof given in Chap. 2 of this book, based on the hindsight provided by our later results, is simpler and much more concise.

In this project, we investigated time reversal (TR) based signal processing theory and algorithm development for target detection, localization, imaging, and interference cancellation in the electromagnetic domain. We conducted a thorough study of time reversal for these applications, developed new suites of detection and imaging algorithms and derived analytical expressions quantifying their performance, confirmed the analytical results with extensive numerical simulations, and demonstrated the gains in performance over conventional methods using real world electromagnetic data. The algorithms developed included TR-channel matched detectors, TR adaptive interference canceller (TRAIC) and TR beamforming for imaging and localization, and TR-SAR for improved ghost removal in SAR imaging. Our algorithms, analytical, and experimental findings have been consistently summarized in the annual reports we have submitted and in over 30 publications submitted to the technical literature (Journals and Conferences.) This Final Report summarizes the major achievements of the program.

Source reconstruction is a type of an electromagnetic inverse problem that has a wide range of applications. Using the time reversal invariance property of the Maxwell's equations, reconstruction of electromagnetics sources can be realized. In this thesis, the time reversal is achieved using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) algorithm. The working of such a time reversal operation is demonstrated in a two and a three-dimensions. A part of the thesis is focused on the comparison of the quality of the reconstructed sources with different parameters of the experimental setup. A second method that is used for accurate reconstruction is analyzed with its limitations elaborated. A different method is then presented to fix the limitations of the previous method of time reversal as another part of the thesis. The final part of the thesis simulates a different set-up and checks the validity of using time reversal for a practical application.

Among the branches of classical physics, electromagnetism is the domain which experiences the most spectacular development, both in its fundamental and practical aspects. The quantum corrections which generate non-linear terms of the standard Maxwell equations, their specific form in curved spaces, whose predictions can be confronted with the cosmic polarization rotation, or the topological model of electromagnetism, constructed with electromagnetic knots, are significant examples of recent theoretical developments. The similarities of the Sturm-Liouville problems in electromagnetism and quantum mechanics make possible deep analogies between the wave propagation in waveguides, ballistic electron movement in mesoscopic conductors and light propagation on optical fibers, facilitating a better understanding of these topics and fostering the transfer of techniques and results from one domain to another. Industrial applications, like magnetic refrigeration at room temperature or use of metamaterials for antenna couplers and covers, are of utmost practical interest. So, this book offers an interesting and useful reading for a broad category of specialists.
