The Oppenheimer Brinkman Kramers theory of the capture of electrons by alpha particles in their passage through matter is formulated in terms of a momentum representation of the electrons. For a heavy ion carrying a core of electrons. capture is largely into excited states. Total cross sections for such ions are estimated assuming hydrogen like representations for the electron in the captured states and treating the atom from which capture takes place by the Thomas Fermi model.

The first Born approximation with both the proton-proton and proton-electron interaction is used to calculate the high energy electron capture cross section. It is shown that the high energy proton-nucleus amplitude has a dominant peak for backward scattering (centre-of-mass system). As a consequence of this peak, if the protons are treated as distinguishable particles, the cross section depends upon the impact energy E as E(3- ) in contrast to the commonly accepted E(6- ) dependence. When the protons are treated as indistinguishable particles, the electron capture cross section is not defined at sufficiently high energies. This same cross section is also calculated using the distorted wave approximation as developed by Bassel and Gerjuoy in 1960. It is shown that the proton-nucleus amplitude is only cancelled in the forward direction, and consequently the electron capture cross section is again not defined at high energies. (Author).

Classical and quantal nonrelativistic scattering between simple atomic systems is reviewed, and most approximations currently used in calculations on electron capture are discussed. The OBK interaction is generalized to include capture from neutral atoms by singly charged many-electron ions; the sum over the squares of the vector coupling coefficients is affected in the formula for the OBK cross section for p-orbital capture by protons into H(ns). The cross section for H(+) + H(1s) to H(Sigma n1) + H(+) at high impact energies is determined classically. The second Born amplitudes at high impact energies for H(+) + H(1s) to H(1s) + H(+) and H(+) + D(1s) to H(1s) + D(+) are evaluated approximately using the Green's function of the post Hamiltonian. Two modifications of Thomas' classical model for heavy atoms are proposed, and corresponding cross sections are calculated for H(+) + B to H(Sigma n1) + B(+) with B = O, N, Ne, A, Kr, Xe. A semiclassical theory is developed for charge transfer in alkali atom-alkali-ion collision at low impact velocities, and cross sections are obtained for H, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs. OBK cross sections are calculated for s-orbital capture from He(1s(2)), N((4)S), O((3)P), and p-orbital capture from N((4)S), O((3)P), all for incident protons capturing into H(1s). Born prior and post cross sections are calculated for H(+) + O((3)P) to H(1s) + O(+)((4)S) and H(1s) + H(1s) to H( - )(1s(2)) + H(+).

The impact parameter version of the two-state approximation is used to calculate the cross sections for the two processes, (A) H(+) + Li(+) (1s2) to H(ls) + Li(+2)(ls), (B) H(+) + Tl(+) (6s2) to H(ls) + Tl(+2) )6s). The corresponding differential equations were integrated numerically with and without momentum transfer (mt) for process (A), but owing to the numerical complexity of the equations describing process (B) only the case mt = 0 was evaluated. Cross sections for (A) are compared with and without the inclusion of mt, and similarities between the two processes, (A) and (B), are discussed. The cross-section impact-energy variations for capture from Tl(+) and capture from the neutral atoms Kr and Xe are compared.
