Electron EM reviews the theoretical and experimental work of the last 30 years on continuous electron emission in energetic ion-atom collisions. High incident energies for which the projectile is faster than the mean orbital velocity of the active electron are considered. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of ionization mechanisms. They are interpreted in terms of Coulomb centers associated with the projectile and target nuclear fields which strongly interact with the outgoing electron. General properties of the two-center electron emission are analyzed. Particular attention is given to screening effects. A brief overview of multiple ionization processes is also presented. The survey concludes with a complete compilation of experimental studies of ionization cross sections.

The central subject of this volume is the atomic and molecular physics of heavy par ticles as investigated with charged particle accelerators. The natural division be tween atomic structure and ion-atom collision studies, and the similar division be tween the theoretical and experimental branches of these subjects, are reflected in a parallel subdivision into corresponding chapters. In addition, one chapter is de voted to the important interface between atomic and molecular physics with condensed matter physics. A principal aim of the present volume is to provide a compact de scription of a number of current interests and trends within the heavy particle structure and collisions field in a sufficiently general, non-specialized way that interested scientists who wish to become acquainted with such interests and trends can do so without becoming bogged down in excessive archival detail. It is, therefore, hoped that the book will be of some use to advanced students who seek a general in troduction to these subjects. Numerous, more specialized, archival review articles are frequently referred to in each chapter for the benefit of those who seek more detailed knowledge about particular topics discussed. The editor wishes to acknowledge the support of two U. S. government agencies: the Office of Naval Research and the National Science Foundation, during the preparation of this volume. Sincere thanks are due Mrs. Betty Thoe for her excellent editorial work on the various manuscripts and Mrs.

This book contains the invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the V International Conference on the Physics of Highly Charged Ions, which was held at the lustus-Liebig-Universi tat Giessen, 10-14 September 1990. This conference was the ftfth in a series -after Stockholm (1982), Oxford (1984), Groningen (1986) and Grenoble (1988) -to deal with a rapidly growing fteld, which comprises the spectroscopy of highly charged ions and their interactions with photons, electrons, atoms, ions, and solids. Most of the matter of the universe is in the ionized state. Investigations dealing with hot plasmas on earth have been greatly furthered by thermonuclear-fusion research. The increasing maturity of this programme has revealed the fundamental role of highly charged ions in fusion plasmas. Today, it is clear that a detailed knowledge of the production mechanisms of highly charged ions and their interactions with other plasma constituents is an important prerequisite for a better understanding of the microscopic and macroscopic plasma properties. The study of highly charged ions involves various branches of physics. It was the aim of the conference to bring together physicists working in atomic collisions and spectroscopy, in plasma physics and astrophysics, as well as in solid-state and ion-source physics. About 220 scientists from 20 nations attended the conference, indicating the strong worldwide interest and the vital ity of research in this fteld.

Atomic and molecular collision physics has undergone extraordinary transformations in last few decades which is driven by a convergence of breakthroughs in the sophisticated instruments, theoretical advancements, and computational capabilities. Rapid advancement and availability of a number of sophisticated tools, such as, accelerators, ion sources, lasers, synchrotrons, free electron lasers etc, have led this remarkable transformation. On the other hand, there has been a phenomenal growth in the theoretical front which has not only complemented the experimental data, but also have predicted new mechanisms guiding the experimentalists to venture into the new and challenging experiments. This comprehensive collection of articles aims to capture the essence of these exciting developments, offering a comprehensive overview of the latest insights into the field. The articles are prepared such that the newcomers in the field will get a glimpse in the field while presenting state-of-the-art reviews for the scientists working in the field. The thirty authors from different countries, who have prepared the thirteen articles, are experts in their respective fields of research. The articles deal with relatively new discoveries in atomic and molecular physics as well as the latest development in the field. The experimental techniques and the related scientific achievements using different electron spectrometers, EUV/VUV spectrometers, high-resolution momentum imaging and COLTRIMS have been dealt in details. The post-collision interaction in ion-atom collisions, the atomic and molecular ICD, spatial coherence in molecular double slit scattering, electron capture and Shannon entropy, collisions involving atomic and molecular dimers, ultrafast processes in clusters and fullerene (C60), and processes like ionization and electron emission are delved in various chapters. It also explores the theoretical modeling for the structure and collisions involving water molecule and water-clusters [(H2O)n], important for radio-biological applications. In addition, theoretical techniques, such as, the CDW-EIS, CTMC, TDDFT and TDLDA, eikonal impulse approximation, perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory are introduced in different chapters. A few dynamical scenarios using fast and ultrafast laser pulses are explored, theoretically, starting from femtosecond to the attosecond domain. Bridging the gap between the spectroscopy and collisional aspects is one unique feature of this book. A suitable balance between theory-based (seven chapters) and experiment-based (six chapters) articles is important characteristics of this volume. Each chapter, surveys not only the current state of knowledge but also indicating the pathways forward and indicating the practical applications of atomic collisions in diverse scientific disciplines, such as, science of plasmas, astrochemistry, astrophysics, radiobiology, radiation damage, laser and accelerator technology etc. It is expected that the volume serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and enthusiasts alike, pushing the boundaries of our understanding of atomic physics and its applications.

This book is based upon a part of the invited and contributing talks at the 25th International Symposium on Ion-Atom Collisions, ISIAC (biennial), held on July 23-25, 2017 in Palm Cove, Queensland, Australia. To aid the general reader, all the authors tried to present their chapters in the context of the development of the addressed particular themes and the underlying major ideas and intricacies. Some chapters contain new results that have not been previously published elsewhere. Whenever possible, the authors made their attempts to connect the basic research in atomic and molecular collision physics with some important applications in other branches of physics as well as across the physics borders. It is hoped that the material presented in this book will be interesting and useful to the beginners and specialists alike. The contents and expositions are deemed to be helpful to the beginners in assessing the potential overlap of some of the presented material with their own research themes and this might provide motivations for possible further upgrades. Likewise, specialists could take advantage of these reviews to see where the addressed themes were and where they are going, in order to acknowledge the fruits of the efforts made thus far and actively contribute to tailoring the directions of future research. Overall, this book is truly interdisciplinary. It judiciously combines experiments and theories within particle collision physics on atomic and molecular levels. It presents state-of-the-art fundamental research in this field. It addresses the possibilities for significant and versatile applications outside standard atomic and molecular collision physics ranging from astrophysics, surface as well as cluster physics/chemistry, hadron therapy in medicine and to the chemical industry. It is then, as Volume 2, fully in the spirit of the 'Aims and Scope' of this book series by reference to its 'Mission Statement'.

This comprehensive volume surveys the general aspects of atomic cluster science and outlines some of its important new challenges. It begins by detailing the recent advances in the understanding of structure and the essential properties of selected atomic cluster systems, fullerenes and confined atoms. Recent advances in the field of photo processes involving atomic clusters and fullerenes are discussed, and an entire chapter is devoted to the problem of fission dynamics of atomic clusters, presenting parallels with similar processes in nuclear physics. The book goes on to describe the problems of electron-cluster collisions with special emphasis on polarization and collective excitation effects. The important area of the behavior of atomic clusters in laser fields is considered; the ionization, collective dynamics of electrons in the system in the presence of the laser field, and the laser induced dynamics of molecules and clusters are thoroughly described. Finally, a broad spectrum of problems in the area of ionic collisions with fullerenes and metal clusters is covered — from both experimental and theoretical points of view — and the results of the most recent measurements are reported. The concluding chapter takes a careful look at the interaction of an atomic cluster with a surface. The problems of cluster deposition and formation at a surface as well as collision processes involving clusters deposited at a surface are considered through a number of illustrative examples./a
