This book is intended to collect in one place as much information as possible on the use of EPR spectroscopy in the analysis of systems in which two or more spins are magnetically coupled. This is a field where research is very active and chemists are elbow-to-elbow with physicists and biologists in the forefront. Here, as in many other fields, the contributions coming from different disciplines are very important, but for active researchers it is sometimes difficult to follow the literature, due to differences in languages, and sources which are familiar to, e. g. , a physicist, are exotic to a chemist. Therefore, an effort is needed in order to provide a unitary description of the many different phenomena which are collected under the title. In order to define the arguments which are treated, it is useful to state clearly what is not contained here. So we do not treat magnetic phenomena in conductors and we neglect ferro- and antiferromagnetic resonance. The basic foundations of EPR spectroscopy are supposed to be known by the reader, while we introduce the basis of magnetic interactions between spins. In the first two chapters we review the foundations of exchange interactions, trying to show how the magnetic parameters are bound to the electronic structure of the interacting centers.

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Volume 18 highlights major developments in this area reported in 2001 and 2002, with results being set into the context of earlier work and presented as a set of critical yet coherent overviews. The topics covered describe contrasting types of application ranging from biological areas such as EPR studies of free-radical reactions in biology and medically-related systems to experimental developments and applications involving EPR imaging the use of very high fields and time-resolved methods. Critical and up-to-the-minute reviews of advances involving the design of spin-traps advances in spin-labelling paramagnetic centres on solid surfaces exchange-coupled oligomers metalloproteins and radicals in flavoenzymes are also included. As EPR continues to find new applications in virtually all areas of modern science including physics chemistry biology and materials science this series caters not only for experts in the field but also those wishing to gain a general overview of EPR applications in a given area.

EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications presents methods and applications of modern EPR for the study of free radical processes in solids, which so far are only available in the journal literature. The first part of the book, covering trends in methods, contains experimentally oriented chapters on continuous wave and pulsed EPR techniques and special methods involving muon magnetic resonance and optical detection and theory for dynamic studies. New simulation schemes, including the influence of dynamics, are presented as well as advances in the calculation of hyperfine and electronic g-tensors. The second part of the book presents applications involving studies of radiation and photo-induced inorganic and organic radicals in inert matrices, including novel results of quantum effects in small radicals. High-spin molecules and complexes are also considered as well as radical processes in photosynthesis. Recent advances in EPR dosimetry are summarized.

The phenomenon of spin-crossover has a large impact on the physical properties of a solid material, including its colour, magnetic moment, and electrical resistance. Some materials also show a structural phase change during the transition. Several practical applications of spin-crossover materials have been demonstrated including display and memory devices, electrical and electroluminescent devices, and MRI contrast agents. Switchable liquid crystals, nanoparticles, and thin films of spin-crossover materials have also been achieved. Spin-Crossover Materials: Properties and Applications presents a comprehensivesurvey of recent developments in spin-crossover research, highlighting the multidisciplinary nature of this rapidly expanding field. Following an introductory chapter which describes the spin-crossover phenomenon and historical development of the field, the book goes on to cover a wide range of topics including Spin-crossover in mononuclear, polynuclear and polymeric complexes Structure: function relationships in molecular spin-crossover materials Charge-transfer-induced spin-transitions Reversible spin-pairing in crystalline organic radicals Spin-state switching in solution Spin-crossover compounds in multifunctional switchable materials and nanotechnology Physical and theoretical methods for studying spin-crossover materials Spin-Crossover Materials: Properties and Applications is a valuable resource for academic researchers working in the field of spin-crossover materials and topics related to crystal engineering, solid state chemistry and physics, and molecular materials. Postgraduate students will also find this book useful as a comprehensive introduction to the field.
