In the first set of experiments---the low-field experiments---we studied the effect of spin-orbit coupling. We tuned the strength of spin-orbit coupling from the weak localization regime to the antilocalization regime using in situ gate control. Using a new theory, we separately extracted the values for the three material-dependent spin-orbit constants. We also measured the average and variance of conductance in assorted quantum dots, with and without strong spin-orbit coupling, and found quantitative agreement with recent random matrix theory predictions, as long as we also properly included the effects of parallel magnetic field.

This book provides an overview of recent developments in experiments probing the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states of the second Landau level, especially the \nu=5/2 state. It summarizes the state-of-the-art understanding of these FQH states. It furthermore describes how the properties of the FQH states can be probed experimentally, by investigating tunneling and confinement properties. The progress towards the realization of an experiment, allowing to probe the potentially non-Abelian statistics of the quasiparticle excitations at \nu=5/2 is discussed. The book is intended as a reference for graduate students, PostDocs and researchers starting in the field. The experimental part of this book gives practical advice for solving the experimental challenges which researchers studying highly fragile FQH states are faced with.

2(cont.) Weak quasiparticle tunneling has been long proposed as a method to study the properties of these quasiparticles, because the tunneling conductance depends on both the charge of the tunneling quasiparticles and the modified Coulomb interaction that characterizes their interactions. Several models have been proposed to describe the state at v = 5/2; some predict non-abelian statistics, while others predict the more mundane abelian properties. Although all models predict the same quasiparticle charge e* = 1/4, they predict different values of the interaction parameter, thus allowing us to potentially discriminate between them. We study the temperature and dc bias dependence of the tunneling conductance, while preserving the same filling fraction in the constriction and the bulk of the sample. The data show scaling of the bias-dependent tunneling over a range of temperatures, in agreement with the theory of weak quasiparticle tunneling, allowing us to extract values for the effective charge and interaction parameter of the quasiparticles. The ranges of values obtained are consistent with those predicted by the anti-Pfaffian and the U(1) x SU2(2) models, making these non-abelian states more likely than abelian ones.

This book is on the fundamental studies of electron transport in different 2DEG systems. Electron transport in wide range of GaN samples were studied including in a high carrier density regime where a second conductive subband channel was occupied. The spin-orbit interaction were studied in the GaN heterostructures by using the weak antilocalization measurements. We also studied the energy relaxation processes in the GaN systems to understand the power dissipation. The second topic was electron dynamics on Quantum Hall liquid in GaAs system. We were able to study the Quantum Hall liquids in their deep insulating regime by using single electron transistors. The objective was to understand the charge motions in the quantum Hall liquid in an antidot structure, a particularly important structure for possible device applications in quantum computation. We have also shown that the response associated with the motion of electrons in the bulk of the integer quantum Hall layer could be enhanced by using multiple layers. This finding led us to a magnetometer application which was demonstrated by using a heterostructure with 25 identical multiple quantum wells.

This volume represents the Proceedings of the Oji International Seminar on the Application of High Magnetic Fields in the Physics of Semiconductors and Magnetic Materials, which was held at the Hakone Kanko Hotel, Hakone, Japan, from 10 to 13 September 1980. The Seminar was organized as a related meeting to the 15th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors which was held in Kyoto between 1 and 5 September 1980. From 12 countries, 77 de legates participated in the Seminar. This Seminar was originally planned to be a formal series of International Conferences on the Application of High Magnetic Fields in the Physics of Semiconductors, which was first started by Professor G. Landwehr in 1972 in WUrzburg as a satellite conference to the 11th Semiconductor Conference in Warsaw. The Conference in WUrzburg was con ducted in an informal atmosphere which was followed by three conferences, in WUrzburg in 1974 and 1976, and in Oxford in 1978. At the current Seminar the physics of magnetic materials was added to the scope of the Seminar, because high-field magnetism is also an important research area in the physics of high magnetic fields and is also one of the most active fields in physics in Japan. In the last decade, considerable effort has been devoted to develop the techniques for generating the high magnetic fields in many high-field labora tories in the world.
