This book is an illustrated guide to assistive technologies and devices (AT/AD). It chronicles the use of AT/AD - technology used by individuals with disabilities to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. In general, AT can include mobility devices such as walkers and wheelchairs, as well as hardware, software, and peripherals that assist people with disabilities in accessing computers or other information technologies. Advanced AT has coincided with the advent of personal electronic devices that could be customized for use, such as computers and smart phones. For people with disabilities, AT includes simple gadgets for the home and office, electronic gadgets and complex computer systems for the workplace, mobility aids and accessible vans for getting around and modified equipment for lifestyle needs, such as talking ATMs and strobe light alarm systems. This book empowers people with disabilities to use assistive technologies to overcome some of their physical or mental limitations and have a more equal playing field. It includes real-life examples about how people with disabilities are using assistive technology (AT) to assist them in daily tasks, and discusses emotional issues related to AT/AD.

This book is based on the papers presented at the Workshop on "Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired" held in Flo rence at the Institute for the Research on Electromagnetic Waves of the Italian Research Council on April 4-6, 1984. The Workshop, sponsored by the Committee for Medical and Public Health Research of the Commission of the European Communities, was meant to exchange ideas about the need, importance and feasibility of a European cooperation in the field of visual impairment and to identify promising research areas, where current national activities could take advantage of such a collaboration in order to increase their efficiency. In particular, it dealt with the develop ment and use of technical aids (mainly based on computers and signal processing techniques) and with the elaboration, evaluation and standardization of new methods and tests. The attendance was multidisciplinary, including researchers from the fields of technology, medicine and psychology and representatives from organizations involved in the rehabi litation of the visually impaired. Five technical sessions were organized, dealing with the following topics: automatic production of Braille and systems for paperless Braille, aids for reading and for the interaction with coded informa tion sources, low vision aids, transduction of visual infor mation into a tactile representation, mobility aids. Three different application sectors were mainly considered: education and culture, vocational training, mobility. A final session was devoted to a discussion in working groups. The results are briefly outlined in the following concise report of the Workshop.

One of a series of three resource guides concerned with communication, control, and computer access for disabled and elderly individuals, the directory focuses on communication aids. The book's six chapters each cover products with the same primary function. Cross reference indexes allow access to listings of products by function, input/output features, and by computer model. Switches are listed separately by input/output features. Provided for each product is usually an illustration, the product name, vendor, size, weight, power source, cost, and a description. The first chapter covers speech aids (prosthetic and orthotic aids to oral speech, such as artificial larynges and speech amplifiers); the second covers pointing and typing aids (headsticks, mouthsticks, handsplints, lightbeam headpointers, and other devices for facilitating an individual's ability to point or press keys); the third describes electronic training and communication initiation aids; the fourth reviews non-electronic communication aids; the fifth covers electronic communication and writing aids; and the last chapter considers telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD's)--devices specifically designed for deaf individuals to communicate over phone lines using ASCII, Baudot, touchtones, or synthetic speech. Appendixes include a list of additional sources of information, a glossary, addresses of manufacturers listed with their products, and an alphabetical listing of all products in the three-book series. For people with severe/profound and multiple disabilities, managing the basic necessities of daily life often poses myriad challenges. Despite great odds, advances in assistive technology are making a difference in these individuals’ lives. Advances in microswitches, voice outcome communication aids, and computer-based systems are creating new opportunities for living independently, improving basic life skills, and reducing problem behaviors among individuals with combined motor, sensory, and intellectual disabilities. This unique volume examines how education and rehabilitation can improve the lives of even those individuals most affected by severe/profound and multiple disabilities. Interventions currently in use and in experimental stages are surveyed in terms of how they work and their applicability to clients with various needs. In addition, it examines the characteristics of developmentally disabled populations and offers guidelines for choosing suitable technologies. It presents empirical evidence on the advances in improving interaction with caregivers, control of the home environment, handling self-care tasks, and other core skills. Assistive Technology examines interventions that are innovative, respectful of the dignity of clients, and practical for ongoing use, including: • Microswitches in habilitation programs. • Speech-generating devices for communication and social development. • Instructional technology for promoting academic, work, and leisure skills. • Assistive technology for promoting ambulation. • Orientation systems for promoting movement indoors. • Assistive technology for reducing problem behaviors. A state-of-the-art guide to a growing field, Assistive Technology is an invaluable resource for researchers, clinicians, graduate students as well as clinicians and allied professionals in developmental psychology, rehabilitation and rehabilitative medicine, learning and instruction, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and educational technology.
