The true pioneers in electronic publishing put their bibliographic databases on tape and online in the 1960s. Nearly all of them had long experience with compiling information for distribution in printed form and a strong market connection. As a result of Soviet advances in science and space technology, American government support for information science and academic libraries flowed freely for a little over a decade, making possible tremendous advances in technology, in retrieval techniques and in sophisticated coverage. Advances in information technology and market conditions have encouraged many more participants to underwrite the development of databases that now extend into the arts, social sciences, business, and popular interests. These essays show how production statistics accompanied by statements of editorial coverage provide a fairly accurate reflection of output of many of the major disciplinary bibliographic databases. The urgent priority of information resources in the 1960s has encouraged comprehensive servicing of the formal research literature as published in journals and monographs. Authors have counted subject words, languages, origins, types of publication, and so on over several decades. This volume also includes articles on some databases that are not strictly bibliographic, such as the CMG database of college courses, which illuminates some of the changes in college textbook publishing. Information seekers will find the many tables of practical use, as guidance to what and how much may be found within each database. Analysts of publishing, of science policy, and of higher education will find information relevant to expenditures, human resources, and other indicators of education, research, and technology activity.

The Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography presents over 3,800 selected English-language articles, books, and other textual sources that are useful in understanding scholarly electronic publishing efforts on the Internet. It covers digital copyright, digital libraries, digital preservation, digital rights management, digital repositories, economic issues, electronic books and texts, electronic serials, license agreements, metadata, publisher issues, open access, and other related topics. Most sources have been published from 1990 through 2010. Many references have links to freely available copies of included works. Peter Jacso said in ONLINE (vol. 27, no. 3 2003, pp. 73-76): "SEP is compiled with utter professionalism. It reminds me of the work of the best artisans who know not only every item that leaves their workshops, but each component used to create them--providing the ideal quality control. . . . The selection of items is impeccable. I have yet to find journal articles irrelevant to the scope of the bibliography. SEP could be used as a benchmark in evaluating abstracting/indexing databases that proudly claim to have coverage of electronic publishing, but do not come close to SEP."

eLearning and Digital Publishing will occupy a unique niche in the literature accessed by library and publishing specialists, and by university teachers and planners. It examines the interfaces between the work done by four groups of university staff who have been in the past quite separate from, or only marginally related to, each other—library staff, university teachers, university policy makers, and staff who work in university publishing presses. All four groups are directly and intimately connected with the main functions of universities—the creation, management and dissemination of knowledge in a scholarly and reflective manner. This book provides a framework which clearly portrays the relationships between information literacy, eLearning and digital publishing. The structure of the book has three main sections: the first has primarily an educational focus, the second a focus on digital publishing, and the third builds on the first two sections to examine overall implications for the growth of knowledge and scholarly communication.

This informative book explores the exciting possibilities available to libraries with increased use of electronic means for serials publications. The reality of the electronic journal raises a multitude of questions that will impact upon journal publishers, suppliers, librarians, and library patrons. Based on a seminar sponsored by Australian Serials Special Interest Group and the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services, The Electronic Journal outlines the issues, indicates major trends, and sets challenges for libraries and publishers concerning new technologies and serials. Libraries in Australia and New Zealand have struggled for years with the problems of distance and cost in a print-oriented publishing industry dominated by countries half way across the globe. The Electronic Journal provides practical advice on the need for Australasian libraries to become actively involved in the possibilities of this new technology in order to maximize the benefits for themselves and their clients. Throughout the book, the contributors emphasize the need for improved communication between authors, publishers, information technology specialists, libraries, and users, and propose a standardization of formats and delivery systems to aid easy cooperation between such diverse groups. The chapters stress the need for user-friendly access to information along with education programs that are tailor-made to meet different access requirements. A wealth of critical issues that serials librarians must face with the advent of the electronic delivery of serials are covered in this essential volume including value-added services, property rights issues, cost considerations, and the developments of standards for information delivery. The Electronic Journal provides practical steps that Australasian libraries can take to insure they will not be left behind the rest of the world in electronic journal technology that will be especially applicable to the unique needs of libraries in Australian and New Zealand.
