Stephen Almagno’s career as a professor of library science began at the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. In 1990, he became the first professor in the United States to teach an information ethics course in a library and information science program. Almagno’s work in the area of information ethics was recognized at the 2001 “Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century” symposium held at the University of Memphis on October 18–21, 2001, upon the occasion of his retirement from the University of Pittsburgh. The essays in this book were presented at the symposium honoring Almagno. The first section of the book features papers that pay special tribute to Almagno. The second contains papers on library issues and ethics, such as the ethics of electronic information in China and eastern Europe, the organizations that represent information professionals, the ethics of user privacy in the digital library, and ethical implications of e-commerce, to name just a few. The third section covers topical issues, such as Internet plagiarism, ethical hacking and the security justification, social democracy and information media policy, and the ethics of dialogue, among others.

A philosophical and practical model for approaching the ethical challenges librarians are facing is provided in this work. The moral value of information is first examined, prompting a rethinking of librarians' understanding of professional neutrality and calling for them to broaden their role as community information specialists. Organizational ethics are next covered; the authors recommend specific management styles and values appropriate to libraries. This is followed by a critical analysis of the culture and tradition of librarianship, showing how the field has reached its current identity and how its history can provide insights for new professional values. Practical recommendations for handling ethical problems in reference service, collection development and Internet access are then presented.

This in-depth treatment provides concrete background and guidelines for every library, museum, or archive, no matter what the size or mission. Issues related to the components of the collection, gifts, and donations (real property and tax implications), rights to privacy, users' rights of access, copyright and information control, and responsibility for safety in public spaces are covered in depth. Over the last few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of papers and journal articles dealing with various ethical issues in librarianship, but only a few books. Information workers find themselves rendering new services and providing new kinds of information without much recourse to universally accepted ethical standards. This work is an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the subject. It promotes the view that as information managers, librarians must join with other professionals to renew a commitment to and interest in ethics. The book deals with such topics as ethics in general, the control of ideas, building collections, acquisitions and cataloging, access services, the reference function, special libraries, research and publication, and intellectual property and copyright. A chapter discusses why ethics matters.

A library must function with integrity in order to function well. This book looks at a broad range of library functions through the lens of integrity and ethics. This largely unexplored area of study is handled exceptionally well by the library and information professionals contained in these pages. This book addresses the ethical and integrity issues that may come up in the day to day workings of the library as well considerations for the ethical education of our future librarians. Within a framework based on the ethical issues that are attached with information management, this book examines the impact of the US Patriot Act, library authentication and access management, plagiarism and social networking. This material was published in the Journal of Library Administration.

Most librarians believe that they are part of a profession that is service oriented, democratic and nonjudgmental. Implicit in these principles is a core of professional ethics, allowing librarians to make effective, informed choices in matters affecting the library, its patrons and staff. Many of the ethical dilemmas facing the profession are covered here through a series of case studies. The focus is on librarians' relationships with patrons, colleagues, organizations, resources and vendors. Such issues as parental consent, patrons' rights to privacy, union activities, library endorsements, censorship, and many others are covered. Each case study is followed by questions that highlight the particular ethical problem.
