The Second Physicist written by Christa Jungnickel and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-10 with Science categories.

This book explores the rise of theoretical physics in 19th century Germany. The authors show how the junior second physicist in German universities over time became the theoretical physicist, of equal standing to the experimental physicist. Gustav Kirchhoff, Hermann von Helmholtz, and Max Planck are among the great German theoretical physicists whose work and career are examined in this book. Physics was then the only natural science in which theoretical work developed into a major teaching and research specialty in its own right. Readers will discover how German physicists arrived at a well-defined field of theoretical physics with well understood and generally accepted goals and needs. The authors explain the nature of the work of theoretical physics with many examples, taking care always to locate the research within the workplace. The book is a revised and shortened version of Intellectual Mastery of Nature: Theoretical Physics from Ohm to Einstein, a two-volume work by the same authors. This new edition represents a reformulation of the larger work. It retains what is most important in the original work, while including new material, sharpening discussions, and making the research more accessible to readers. It presents a thorough examination of a seminal era in physics.

David Hilbert (1862-1943) was the most influential mathematician of the early twentieth century and, together with Henri Poincaré, the last mathematical universalist. His main known areas of research and influence were in pure mathematics (algebra, number theory, geometry, integral equations and analysis, logic and foundations), but he was also known to have some interest in physical topics. The latter, however, was traditionally conceived as comprising only sporadic incursions into a scientific domain which was essentially foreign to his mainstream of activity and in which he only made scattered, if important, contributions. Based on an extensive use of mainly unpublished archival sources, the present book presents a totally fresh and comprehensive picture of Hilbert’s intense, original, well-informed, and highly influential involvement with physics, that spanned his entire career and that constituted a truly main focus of interest in his scientific horizon. His program for axiomatizing physical theories provides the connecting link with his research in more purely mathematical fields, especially geometry, and a unifying point of view from which to understand his physical activities in general. In particular, the now famous dialogue and interaction between Hilbert and Einstein, leading to the formulation in 1915 of the generally covariant field-equations of gravitation, is adequately explored here within the natural context of Hilbert’s overall scientific world-view. This book will be of interest to historians of physics and of mathematics, to historically-minded physicists and mathematicians, and to philosophers of science.

Analytical Mechanics written by John G Papastavridis and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-06 with Mathematics categories.

This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, treatise on the energetic mechanics of Lagrange and Hamilton, that is, classical analytical dynamics, and its principal applications to constrained systems (contact, rolling, and servoconstraints). It is a book on advanced dynamics from a unified viewpoint, namely, the kinetic principle of virtual work, or principle of Lagrange. As such, it continues, renovates, and expands the grand tradition laid by such mechanics masters as Appell, Maggi, Whittaker, Heun, Hamel, Chetaev, Synge, Pars, Luré, Gantmacher, Neimark, and Fufaev. Many completely solved examples complement the theory, along with many problems (all of the latter with their answers and many of them with hints). Although written at an advanced level, the topics covered in this 1400-page volume (the most extensive ever written on analytical mechanics) are eminently readable and inclusive. It is of interest to engineers, physicists, and mathematicians; advanced undergraduate and graduate students and teachers; researchers and professionals; all will find this encyclopedic work an extraordinary asset; for classroom use or self-study. In this edition, corrections (of the original edition, 2002) have been incorporated. Contents:IntroductionBackground: Basic Concepts and Equations of Particle and Rigid-Body MechanicsKinematics of Constrained SystemsKinetics of Constrained SystemsImpulsive MotionNonlinear Nonholonomic ConstraintsDifferential Variational Principles, and Associated Generalized Equations of Motion of Nielsen, Tsenov, et al.Time-Integral Theorems and Variational PrinciplesIntroduction to Hamiltonian/Canonical Methods: Equations of Hamilton and Routh; Canonical Formalism Readership: Students and researchers in engineering, physics, and applied mathematics. Key Features:No book of this scope (comprehensiveness and state-of-the-art level) has ever been written, in any language, there are no real competitors. This (like the author's other books) is an entirely original work; several of its topics are based on the author's own research, and appear for the first time in book formReadability (“reader friendliness”) in spite of its advanced levelEconomy of thinking: Unified treatment based on Lagrange's kinetic principle of virtual workSuperior and clear notation: both indicial and direct notations for vectors, Cartesian tensors etc.Self-contained exposition: All background mathematics and mechanics are summarized in the handbook like chapter 1Keywords:Analytical Mechanics;Classical Mechanics;Classical Dynamics;Theoretical Mechanics;Advanced Engineering Dynamics;Applied MechanicsReviews: “A monumental treatise … which is going to become a reference book on the subject … It should not be missed by anybody working in the area of analytical dynamics or only wanting to understand major problems of the subject … This landmark reference source … [is] the most comprehensive exposition available of the advanced engineering-oriented dynamics.” Zentralblatt für Math. “This unique treatise should be part of every scientific library and scholarly collection in engineering science.” IEEE Control Systems Magazine “I recommend without hesitation Prof Papastravridis' treatise as a reference source to be acquired by every library of Mathematics, Physics, or Mechanical/Aeronautical/Electrical Engineering department. It is a different book, especially in our Internet era where instant satisfaction is often the primary (sometimes sole) goal of the student or researcher. Putting together 1392 (!!) pages of carefully prepared text and 172 figures (which then become somehow sparse) represents a major effort, to say the least.” Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society “Recipient of the annual competition award, in engineering, of the Association of American Publishers.” The Outstanding Professional and Scholarly Titles of 2002 (March 2003) “Unique in Contents and Perspective … has no Competition in Depth and Breadth.” Dr George Simitses Professor of Engineering Science, Mechanics, and Aerospace Engineering University of Cincinatti and Georgia Institute of Technology, USA “Probably the best of its kind and likely to become standard reference.” Dr Alex Dalgarno FRS, member of US National Academy of Sciences, and “father of molecular astrophysics” and Phillips Professor of Astronomy, Harvard University, and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, USA “The reviewer shares the author's statement that this book with its almost 1,400 pages is unique among the comparable treatises in the breadth and the depth of the covered material. Regarding technicalities — the students and the young scientists will find a lot of interesting examples and solved up to their very end problems. I recommend you to read this special book in analytical mechanics. It is a useful tool to undergraduate and graduate students, professors and researchers in the area of applied mechanics, engineering science, and mechanical, aerospace, and structural engineering, as well for the physicists and applied mathematicians.” Journal of Geometry and Symmetry in Physics

Winner of the 1987 Pfizer Award of the History of Science Society "A majestic study of a most important spoch of intellectual history."—Brian Pippard, Times Literary Supplement "The authors' use of archival sources hitherto almost untouched gives their story a startling vividness. These volumes are among the finest works produced by historians of physics."—Jed Z. Buchwald, Isis "The authors painstakingly reconstruct the minutiae of laboratory budgets, instrument collections, and student numbers; they disentangle the intrigues of faculty appointments and the professional values those appointments reflected; they explore collegial relationships among physicists; and they document the unending campaign of scientists to wring further support for physics from often reluctant ministries."—R. Steven Turner, Science "Superbly written and exhaustively researched."—Peter Harman, Nature

The Scientific Correspondence Of H A Lorentz written by A.J. Kox and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-18 with Mathematics categories.

This volume presents a selection of 434 letters from and to the Dutch physicist and Nobel Prize winner Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853–1928), covering the period from 1883 until a few months before his death in February 1928. The sheer size of the available correspondence (approximately 6000 letters from and to Lorentz) preclude a full publication. The letters included in this volume have been selected according to various criteria, the most important of which is scientific importance. A second criterion has been the availability of letters both from and to Lorentz, so that the reader can follow the exchange between Lorentz and his correspondent. Within such correspondences a few unimportant items, dealing with routine administrative or organizational matters, have been omitted. An exception to the scientific criterion is the exchange of letters between Lorentz and Albert Einstein, Max Planck, Woldemar Voigt, and Wilhelm Wien during World War I: these letters have been included because they shed important light on the disruption of the scientific relations during the war and on the political views of these correspondents as well as of Lorentz. similar reasons the letters exchanged with Einstein and Planck on post-war political issues have been included. Biographical sketch Hendrik Antoon Lorentz was born on July 18, 1853 in the Dutch town of Arnhem. He was the son of a relatively well-to-do owner of a nursery.
