This highly readable book uncovers the mysteries of the physics of elementary particles for a broad audience. From the familiar notions of atoms and molecules to the complex ideas of the grand unification of all the basic forces, this book allows the interested lay public to appreciate the fascinating building blocks of matter that make up our universe.Beginning with a description of the quantum nature of atoms and particles, readers are introduced to the elementary constituents of atomic nuclei: quarks. The book goes on to consider all of the important ideas in particle physics: quantum electrodynamics and quantum chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions, the gauge theories of the weak and electromagnetic interactions, as well as the problem of mass generation. To conclude the book, the ideas of grand unification are described, and finally, some applications to astrophysics are discussed.Your guide to this exciting world is an author who, together with the originator of the idea of quarks, Murray Gell-Mann, has played an important role in the development of the theory of quantum chromodynamics and the concept of grand unification.

Experimental evidenees for non vanishing neutrino masses are now very eon vincing. In the third English edition we have rewritten the paragraphs in which, in the previous edition the question of the neutrino mass has been left open. We have mueh appreciated the diseussions with Stephan Sehönert (Heidel berg) on the new results of the neutrino oseillations and their interpretations. We would like to thank Martin Lavelle (Plymouth) for the translation of the newly written paragraphs and Jürgen Sawinski (Heidelberg) for the exeellent work he has done in reformatting the book. Heidelberg, May 2002 Bogdan Povh Preface to the Second Edition The second English edition has been updated from the fifth edition of the original German text. The principal addition is a chapter on nuclear ther modynamics. We consider in this chapter the behaviour of nuclear matter at high temperature, how it may be studied in the laboratory, via heavy ion experiments and how it was of great importance in the initial stages of the universe. Such a phase of matter may be described and interpreted using the tools of thermodynamics. In this way a connection between particle and nuclear physics and the currently exciting research areas of cosmology and astrophysics may be constructed. We would like to thank Martin Lavelle (Plymouth) for the translation of the new chapter and for revising the old text and Jürgen Sawinski (Heidelberg) for the excellent work he has done in reformatting the book.

A Nobel Prize–winning physicist’s “funny, clever, entertaining” account of the history of particle physics and the hunt for a Higgs boson (Library Journal). In this extraordinarily accessible and witty book, Leon Lederman—“the most engaging physicist since the late, much-missed Richard Feynman” (San Francisco Examiner)—offers a fascinating tour that takes us from the Greeks’ earliest scientific observations through Einstein and beyond in an inspiring celebration of human curiosity. It ends with the quest for the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe. This is not only an enlightening journey through baryons and hadrons and leptons and electrons—it also “may be the funniest book about physics ever written” (The Dallas Morning News). “One of the clearest, most enjoyable new science books in years . . . explains the entire history of physics and cosmology. En route, you’ll laugh so hard you won’t realize how much you are learning.” —San Francisco Examiner “The story of the search for the ultimate constituents of matter has been told many times before, but never with more verve and wit. . . . His hilarious account of how he helped persuade President Reagan to approve the construction of the Super Collider is itself worth the price of the book.” —Los Angeles Times
