Chez les Indiens, les Arabes, les Égyptiens, aussi bien que chez les Grecs, cet art était considéré comme révélé aux prètres par la Divinité, et cette révélation se transmettait ensuite à travers les âges par la tradition. Les philologues diffèrent d'opinion sur l'âge des documents sanscrits dont la découverte ne date pas d'une époque bien éloignée de la nôtre; ainsi les uns les font remonter à 4000, les autres à 11100 ans avant J. C.; d'autres, enfin, les attribuent au premier siècle de l'ère chrétienne. Agar-veda (le livre de la science de la vie) est l'oeuvre sanscrite la plus remarquable au point de vue de la médecine; son auteur est Susrutas.
