Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture The interest in the teaching of agriculture is but a part of a much larger question, - the movement for teaching by means of things that have come within the student's experience. Laboratory work and all manual work are but a part of the same movement. The primary purpose of teaching agriculture is not to make farmers. It is ahuman-interest subject. The underlying reason why such teaching is desirable is because it brings the schools in touch with the home life - the daily life of the community. A large part of our teaching has had no relation whatever to our daily lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Elements of Agriculture: A Book for Young Farmers Before this can be done we must study the char acter of plants, and learn their exact composition. They are not created by a mysterious power, they are merely made up Of matters already in existence. They take up water containing food and other mat ters, and discharge from their roots, or their leaves, or deposit within their pores, those substances that are not required for their growth. It is necessary for us to know what kind of matter is required as food for the plant, and whence it is to be Obtained; this we can learn only through such means as shall separate the elements of which plants are composed. Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture, Southern and Western The author feels no hesitation in taking the ground that agriculture has an educational, or mind-training value, fully equal to geography or history. The facts presented in agriculture are quite like those of physical geography in particular; the description of the development of crops, live stock, and agricultural industries generally is the very best of history. In addition, the study of agriculture has a manifest advantage in training the habits of observation, as it treats of things that are about us - that may be seen, heard, and felt - and therefore truly educates through the environment of the pupil. If a geography class could be taken to Mount Vesuvius and could see the great volumes of ashes, cinders, and lava that are belched forth, covering hundreds of square miles with rich soil, what a lesson it would be in world-building and what an inspiration to the whole school and the whole community! In agriculture we teach facts that may be verified on the farm, in the garden, by the roadside, and in the forest, and facts, too, of greater importance by far to that community than the operations of the far-away volcano. Excerpt from Elements of Agricultural Chemistry and Geology In England, and on the continent of Europe, it has been long understood among the class who own the soil, and cultivate it by the sweat of the brow of other men, and not their personal labor, that success in husbandry must depend upon giving to the soil, in some form, what is annually taken away in cultivated crops. In America, in the older States, the same truth is at length reluctantly admitted. The census tables have shown that the wheat crop of New York, in some counties, has fallen in its average product so low as eight bushels to the acre, where formerly from thirty to forty were produced. Lands deemed inexhaustible have been cropped almost to barrenness. Large sections of territory in Virginia, formerly very productive, by a course of culture not guided by a correct knowledge of the science of Husbandry, have become utterly unproductive, and been abandoned by the original cultivators. A succession of tobacco crops raised by shoal plowing without artificial manuring, or a proper rotation with other products, exhausted the surface soil, and compelled the proprietors to seek fresh fields. Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture: A Treatise on Professional Farming This remark is so pertinent that it has been frequently quoted in Farmers' Institutes. It has never been contradicted. It is in order to meet the want pointed out in the remark that the present little volume has been written. The author does not flatter himself to have done the impossible, but he ventures to hope that a careful perusal of his book Will have a perceptible influence in modifying the low Opinion of many farmers' boys of the value and dignity of their fathers' profession. Excerpt from Elements of Scientific Agriculture: Or the Connection Between Science This little treatise is an attempt to supply a great and growing want in our country; a want of some elementary work, that shall clearly and distinctly explain the great principles that are involved in the applications of science to agriculture. The necessity for such a work has become apparent to all who have engaged in the dissemination of knowledge upon this subject; to all who have endeavored to arouse the farming community, by bringing forward incitements to the study of this new science. The agricultural interest is now awaking to a full sense of its deficiences, and demands imperatively, that knowledge, in clear and comprehensive forms, be placed within its reach. We have large works of great merit, in Johnston's Lectures, and Stephens's Farmers' Guide; but these are too bulky for the man who has just begun to entertain the idea that there may, after all, be something learned from books. Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture for Public Schools, 1904 Wet soils are cold; dry soils are warm; very dry soils become a desert. Dark soils are usually warmer than light ones; sandy soils are warmer than clay soils. The s10pe of the land surface has a marked effect upon the temperature of the soil. A warm soil prepares plant food faster than a cold one. The soil serves as a root bed for plants. It serves as a support to hold many plants in an upright position. Excerpt from Elements Agricultural Chemistry That the phenomena of vegetation are dependent on certain chemical changes occurring in the plant, by which the various elements of its food are elaborated and con verted into vegetable matter, was very early recognised by chemists; and long before the correct principles of that science were established, Van Helmont maintained that plants derived their nourishment from water, while Sir Kenelm Digby, Hook, Bradley, and others, attributed an equally exclusive influence to air, and enlarged on the practical importance of the conclusions to be deduced from their views. These Opinions, which were little better than hypotheses, and founded on very imperfect chemical data, are mentioned by Jethro Tull, the father of modern agri culture, only to deny their accuracy; and he contended that the plants absorb and digest the finer particles of the earth, and attributed the success of the particular system of.
