Excerpt from The Elements of Chess: A Treatise Combining Theory With Practice, and Comprising the Whole of Philidor's Games, and Explanatory Notes, New Modelled; And Arranged Upon an Original Plan A careful examination of the subject suggested the idea of numbering the squares on the board, and mark mg such of the pieces as are liable to be mistaken. He accordingly made the experiment by playing over one of Philidor's games on a board, and with pieces, dis tinctly marked, carefully noting the numbers of the squares to correspond with Philidor's directions. The result encouraged him to proceed, and new model the whole of the games upon this plan with such alterations in the style of the notes as appeared to him necessary for general use. The work thus prepared, is now present ed to the public, under a strong impression that the method proposed, though extremely simple, and easily put in practice, will be found to answer the wishes and expectations of those who are desirous of learning the principles and practice of this ingenious and interesting game It remains for him only to point out the mode of preparing the board and pieces. This is done with a common black lead pencil, by marking on the foot of each of the following pieces of both colours, one letter, as directed below. Elements Of Chess Strategy written by Alexei Kosikov and has been published by Gambit Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Games & Activities categories.

Forming a plan is the most important goal of logical chess thought. Without a good plan, we are reduced to tactical opportunism, rather than harnessing the power of our pieces to achieve specific tasks and make methodical progress towards victory. However, few chess-players - even those fortunate enough to have a trainer - develop a disciplined approach to planning. In this book, one of the world's leading chess teachers provides step-by-step guidelines for identifying the features of a position onto which our strategy should be latched. He adopts a thoroughly modern approach, recognizing that the opponent will have his own plans and be attempting to disrupt ours. The effectiveness of Kosikov's methods - in particular the STEPS algorithm - is shown by his pupils' over-the-board proficiency. Having presented the basics of orderly strategic thinking, Kosikov shows them at work in a variety of middlegame and endgame situations, especially the strategic minefield of minor-piece play. Examples are taken from both classic games and modern grandmaster play, together with instructive moments from games by the author's pupils.

This new 3rd edition has, besides various corrections and improvements, a new introduction and a brand-new chapter called ‘Total Control’. In this 35-page chapter Grooten adds the final instructive brick to his formidable, yet very accessible, building: inspired by Tigran Petrosian’s playing style he explains amateurs how to exploit small advantages. With a new set of exercises. ---- Every club player knows the problem: the opening has ended, and now what? First find the right plan, then the good moves will follow! With this book, International Master Herman Grooten presents to amateur players a complete and structured course on: how to recognize key characteristics in all types of positions how to make use of those characteristics to choose the right plan His teachings are based on the famous "Elements" of Wilhelm Steinitz, but Grooten has significantly expanded and updated the work of the first World Champion. He supplies many modern examples, tested in his own practice as a coach of talented youngsters. In Chess Strategy for Club Players you will learn the basic elements of positional understanding: -- pawn structure -- piece placement -- lead in development -- open files -- weaknesses -- space advantage -- king safety -- exploiting small advantages. The author also explains what to do when, in a given position, the basic principles seem to point in different directions. Each chapter of this fundamental primer ends with a set of highly instructive exercises.
