For the finished picture, with its wealth of detail, the reader must turn to the elaborate work of Lord lindley. But although a sketch is necessarily a humble work, like other humble things it has its uses. By excluding complex details, it accentuates and brings into greater relief those principal features Of the landscape upon which its character depends. So in students' law books, if one can generalise the wilderness of single instances embalmed in the reports, and extract therefrom some broad principles - ii one can, as bacon puts it, rather excite the judgment brie y than inform it tediously - the work will not be altogether useless. These changes have been traced and explained in the text, while. In the notes, the reader has been referred to the leading cases and the best text writers, so that he may, by following the changing methods of interpretation as they appear in the authorities, learn not only what the law of partnership now is, but how it came to have its present status. There has been no attempt to make the citation of cases exhaustive upon well-estab lished propositions. But it is by no means meager. Nearly five thou sand cases being referred to in different parts of the work. Great pains has been taken in the citation of these cases to have them each exactly support the proposition to which it is cited. Excerpt from Handbook on the Law of Partnership, Including Limited Partnerships The original arrangement with the publishers contem plated, not an entirely new treatise on the law of Partner ship, but merely a new edition of Mr. William George's' text on this subject. After the work was begun, however, it seemed advisable to abandon Mr. George's text for the most part, and to prepare a substantially new treatise, us ing such portions of his work as should be found suitable. With the exception, therefore, of Chapters VIII and IX, the present book, both in arrangement and text, is new. A few passages and a number of citations and notes have been taken from Mr. George. Chapters VIII and IX are repro duced substantially as found in Mr. George's book, with the addition of later cases. The law on the subject being rea sonably well worked out in the authorities, the aim of the present author has been to make a clear and definite state ment of the leading principles, in a form serviceable alike to students and practitioners. Whatever merit the book has lies in this direction, rather than in the discussion of controverted points, or the advancement of new theories. The citations, while including all the leading cases, are not exhaustive, but are sufficiently full for practical purposes. The author acknowledges his great indebtedness for valua ble assistance in the task to Mr. Henry A. Hirshberg and to Mr. Oliver S. Rundell; also to Mr. Olcott O.
