With translation assistance and a foreword by Karen Juers-Munby First produced in 1998 at the famous Vienna Burgtheater, the remarkable and provocative Sports Play by Austrian playwright Elfriede Jelinek is a postdramatic theatrical exploration of the making, marketing and sale of the human body and of emotions in sport. It explores contemporary society’s obsession with fitness and body culture bringing into sharp focus our need to belong to a group, a team or a nation. Sport is seen as a form of war in peacetime.

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Art - Installation / Action/Performance Art / Modern Art, grade: 9/10, University of Groningen (Arts), course: Arts, Culture and Media, language: English, abstract: This essay will investigate some theatrical aspects of Robert Wilson's work that make up what Lehmann terms "Landscape theatre" and analyze them according to his concept of Post-dramatic theatre articulated in his book "Post-Dramatic Theatre" from 1999. In order to do this, first, the Post-dramatic theory of Lehmann will be examined and the various features that make up Post-dramatic theatre will be scrutinized. Next, Lehmann's articulation of Landscape theatre along with three important aspects that it comprises off will be analyzed as post-dramatic performance conventions: the use of 'images', metamorphoses, and the distortion of time. This will be done using predominantly Lehmann's theory, as well as input from other theatre scholars and supported by examples from Wilson's performances. A conclusion will be drawn regarding how these conventions work together in Wilson's work to provide the audience with a true Post-dramatic theatre experience. Robert Wilson is an internationally acclaimed experimental theatre stage director. His style of theatre is referred to as 'Theatre of Visuals' or 'Theatre of Images' coined by New York based critic, Bonnie Marranca (Hurstfield). Since the 1960s, Wilson's productions have had a significant influence on the world of theatre and opera. Theatre of Images is Wilson's endeavor at freeing the audience from text specific interpretations, which he found prevalent in Western theatre. He wanted to create theatre where the audience was free to "explore individual meanings from his visual and aural experiences"(Hurstfield).

Modernism Mass Culture And The Aesthetics Of Obscenity written by Allison Pease and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-07-27 with Art categories.

How did explicit sexual representation become acceptable in the twentieth century as art rather than pornography? Allison Pease answers this question by tracing the relationship between aesthetics and obscenity from the 1700s onwards, highlighting the way in which early twentieth-century writers incorporated a sexually explicit discourse into their work. Pease explores how artists such as Swinburne, Aubrey Beardsley, James Joyce and D. H. Lawrence were responsible for shifting the boundaries between aesthetics and pornography that first became of intellectual interest in the eighteenth century and reinforced class distinctions. Her analysis of canonical works, such as Joyce's Ulysses and Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover, is framed by a wide-ranging examination of the changing conceptions of aesthetics from Shaftesbury, Hutcheson and Kant to F. R. Leavis, I. A. Richards and T. S. Eliot. Based on extensive archival work, the book includes examples of period art and illustrations which eloquently demonstrate the shift in public taste and tolerance.

Children Of The Sun written by Hilary Fannin and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-26 with Drama categories.

I am attempting to colonise the last frontier. Time, Elena, time. If we could inhabit different iterations of self, we could undo all the mistakes of the past. Don't you see? Hilary Fannin's radical adaptation of Maxim Gorky's classic 1905 dark comedy reworks the original text and draws it into the here and now. Children of the Sun is the story of a small family and their quixotic collection of acquaintances, entertaining and enraging each other while, unseen beyond their fragile walls, their world is being reshaped by unstoppable forces. The play asks how we survive without the benefit of hindsight and whether science, art or love are capable of saving us from uncertainty and destruction. Co-produced by Rough Magic and the Abbey Theatre, Children of the Sun premiered on the Abbey stage as part of Rough Magic's 40th-anniversary year in April 2024. This edition was published to coincide with that production.

This book studies the literary and cinematic functions of the pornographic as a development from a poetics of obscenity. It focuses on the developments of French, British, and American artistic pornography since the eighteenth century. Discussing female literary figures including Hall, Wharton, Nin, "Reage," Jong, and Shulman; such men as Cleland, Sade, Beardsley, Lawrence, Joyce, and Miller; and film makers such as Brakhage, Jack Smith, Bruce Conner, Bertolucci, Oshima, and Wertmuller; Michelson analyzes both the use of aesthetic pornography and the philosophical, cultural, and legal implications of its use. He proposes that realizing the obscene --in the sense of speaking the unspeakable-- is the principle aesthetic function of pornography.

But he finds himself trapped by social and religious strictures, his passion and guilt winding into a spiral of anguish and paralyzing indecision.
