Joan Aiken's sequel to Sense and Sensibility takes up the stories of Elinor and Marianne, but introduces a dashing new heroine who despite being a 'by-blow' and outcast, uses her wits and talents to find her own way in the world. This is a darker side of Regency society where a young girl who cannot marry for money must find a career, and brave the realities of the Napoleonic wars in Portugal.

Fans of the musical Hamilton and their children won't want to miss this stunning picture book biography about Eliza Hamilton, American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton's extraordinary wife and an important figure in her own right. Includes an afterword from Phillipa Soo, the actress who originated the role of Eliza in Hamilton! We all know the story of scrappy Alexander Hamilton and his rise in American politics--but how much do we know about his workmate, inspiration, and stabilizing force, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton? Margaret McNamara employs the letter-writing style of the period to tell the story of Eliza Hamilton, who was born into a family of considerable wealth, power, and influence in Albany, New York, in 1757. Eliza was expected to marry into a similarly powerful family . . . until she met and fell in love with the charismatic Hamilton. She stood by him throughout his tumultuous life, and after his death, she single-handedly collected his papers and preserved them for historians and musical-theater writers of the future. Eliza outlived Hamilton by fifty years; during that time she founded the first orphanage in New York State, raised funds for the Washington Monument, and kept the flame of her husband's memory and achievements alive. This is a beautiful and informative biography featuring extensive back matter--including information about America's revolution, the historical relevance of letter writing, and a timeline--and exquisite, thoroughly researched art that mirrors paintings from 18th-century America. Every Hamilton lover will want to gift it to the young readers in their lives.

Longer synopsis and biography for Xlibris Website In ELIZA, AN IOWA PIONEER , immigrant stories are written in epistolary form to Elizas papa, her sisters and best friend in the old country. The letters are taken from tales My Family History As Far Back As I Can Remember as narrated by Eliza to her granddaughter, Elizabeth Leitgen, from oral history and American history from 1836-1860. At the age of 16, Eliza, and her brother Heinrich, age 14, are put on a ship with a trunk of bread. It is a solution to their papas financial crisis that is compounded by the potato famine in Lower Saxony, now part of Germany, and his lack of dowry for Eliza. Landing in New Orleans, Eliza and Heinrich are taken in by a kind lady in whose home they work and learn English. From there they make their way north on the Mississippi River, stopping in St. Louis where Eliza meets and marries a fellow countryman, Johann Rolwes. The couple continue north stopping briefly in Quincy, Illinois, then settling permanently on ninety wooded acres of land near Waupeton, Iowa, a trading post on the Mississippi River twenty-five miles north of Dubuque. Elizas letters to her family in the old country reflect the ingenuity, humor and hopes of frontiersmen before the Civil War. She tells of putting a kettle of bread dough in bed with her, allowing her body heat to produce the rising action to save fuel. Detailed encounters with bears, wolves and Indians are experienced and dealt with. Eliza explains how she and Johann chose to make coffins and lay out the dead for their settlement. The completed manuscript include her shipboard journal, sixty letters, maps, and line drawings. Historical notes are added on how to make soap, gestation of pigs, spring butchering, weaving, and fee schedules reflecting the economy of the times are included. Various stages of revision were read to my students in Vallejo. One student returned after graduation to find out how the story ended.

From the New York Times bestselling author of The House of the Spirits, Isabelle Allende, comes a passionate tale of one young woman's quest to save her lover set against the chaos of the 1849 California Gold Rush. Orphaned at birth, Eliza Sommers is raised in the British colony of Valparaíso, Chile, by the well-intentioned Victorian spinster Miss Rose and her more rigid brother Jeremy. Just as she meets and falls in love with the wildly inappropriate Joaquín Andieta, a lowly clerk who works for Jeremy, gold is discovered in the hills of northern California. By 1849, Chileans of every stripe have fallen prey to feverish dreams of wealth. Joaquín takes off for San Francisco to seek his fortune, and Eliza, pregnant with his child, decides to follow him. As Eliza embarks on her perilous journey north in the hold of a ship and arrives in the rough-and-tumble world of San Francisco, she must navigate a society dominated by greedy men. But Eliza soon catches on with the help of her natural spirit and a good friend, the Chinese doctor Tao Chi’en. What began as a search for love ends up as the conquest of personal freedom. A marvel of storytelling, Daughter of Fortune confirms once again Isabel Allende's extraordinary gift for fiction and her place as one of the world's leading writers.
