Paulo Freire (1921-1997) is one of the most widely read and studied educational thinkers of our time. This book has been almost seven years in the making. Though the work has certainly not been continuous for all those years, it was a major focus of the three of us for most of them. It is a tribute to Paulo Freire, his courage, his humanity, and the timelessness and relevancy of his ideas that our work on this manuscript was never tedious, never dull, and never a burden, but rather a constant source of joy, inspiration, and discovery. Although the book was always intended to be a critical but friendly description and analysis of Freire's efforts as Secretary of Education, the need to disseminate information about this radical educational reform became even more urgent after the sad news of Paulo Freire's death in May 1997. Thus, while this text is the result of the scholarly efforts of three researchers, it is also a celebration of a revolutionary thinker who had the unique opportunity to make his ideas concrete and therefore affect the lives of countless young children in his native country. We dedicate our efforts on this volume to Paulo Freire and to the hundreds of educators in Sao Paulo whom he inspired to work tirelessly in creating a happy, democratic school dedicated to serving poor and working class children and their communities. It has been our pleasure and privilege to have worked with Paulo Freire and the many educators involved in educational reform in Sao Paulo. Na primeira, em 16 de junho (aniversário de sua esposa, Elza), foi levado de casa por dois soldados e permaneceu com paradeiro desconhecido por cerca de 24 horas. Oficiais chegaram a negar que Freire estivesse detido, mesmo com sua família tendo testemunhado a prisão. Depois, admitiram que ele estava encarcerado na Segunda Companhia da Guardas do Recife. [...] Freire ficou preso por mais de setenta dias, entre junho e setembro de 1964, na Segunda Companhia da Guardas do Recife e na Cadeia de Olinda. Amargou o começo da prisão numa cela solitária, com apenas 60 centímetros de largura e 1,7 metro de comprimento, com "paredes de cimento áspero, [que] não dava para encostar o corpo" , como lembraria mais tarde. [...] O primeiro interrogatório do tenente-coronel Hélio Ibiapina com Paulo Freire ocorreu em 1o de julho de 1964, quinze dias depois de sua "prisão para averiguação". Constava no prontuário da Delegacia de Segurança Pública de Pernambuco que Freire "era um dos responsáveis pela subversão no campo da alfabetização de adultos" e que "essa subversão era executada com recursos financeiros do próprio governo federal, com ajuda da Aliança para o Progresso". [...] O segundo interrogatório registrado no IPM ocorreu em 16 de setembro, foi mais duro e mais breve. [...] O Inquérito Policial Militar de Paulo Freire é um documento conhecido dos historiadores. Com este pequeno livro, o conteúdo integral dos dois interrogatórios aos quais foi submetido entra em circulação para um público mais amplo, integralmente revisado e com notas de contextualização.
