Canada has been almost continuously involved in major international peace and security enforcement operations since the early 1990s, as part of multilateral efforts to stop wars, monitor peace, avert genocide, promote development or, occasionally, to topple dictators and even win wars. It has deployed anywhere from 1,000 to 4,000 personnel overseas annually since the Gulf War, and participated in missions in Afghanistan, Somalia, Bosnia, Haiti, Libya, East Timor, Iraq and Syria. This volume looks at Canada’s role as interventionist within three broad themes: the lessons learned from interventions in Libya, Afghanistan, Somalia and Haiti; the domestic side of intervention, including Canadian foreign aid and the gender equation in military interventions; and the responsibility to protect, addressing the larger principles and patterns that influence Canada’s engagements. Elusive Pursuits: Lessons from Canada’s Interventions Abroad — the 29th volume of the influential Canada Among Nations series — examines Canada’s role in foreign military and security missions, including the country’s tendency to intervene under the auspices of international institutions. Canada is not just among nations in these efforts, but in nations on a regular basis. This book considers the longer-term impact of these interventions and draws the lessons to be learned from Canada’s past and current interventions, with the certainty that there will always be a next time. Canada Among Nations has been the premier source for critical insight into Canadian foreign policy issues since 1984. This edition continues that tradition by providing students, policy makers and practitioners with a timely compendium of expert opinion on how Canada’s past and present military and peacekeeping missions can provide guidance for engagement in the future.

The Pursuit Of Unhappiness written by Daniel M. Haybron and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-25 with Philosophy categories.

The pursuit of happiness is a defining theme of the modern era. But what if people aren't very good at it? This and related questions are explored in this book, the first comprehensive philosophical treatment of happiness in the contemporary psychological sense. In these pages, Dan Haybron argues that people are probably less effective at judging, and promoting, their own welfare than common belief has it. For the psychological dimensions of well-being, particularly our emotional lives, are far richer and more complex than we tend to realize. Knowing one's own interests is no trivial matter. As well, we tend to make a variety of systematic errors in the pursuit of happiness. We may need, then, to rethink traditional assumptions about human nature, the good life, and the good society. Thoroughly engaged with both philosophical and scientific work on happiness and well-being, this book will be a definitive resource for philosophers, social scientists, policy makers, and other students of human well-being.

While sages extol humility as the chief of all virtue, too often we have treated it as optional, or even as a weakness. Yet, there was nothing that Jesus did that was not saturated with the color of this difficult and enigmatic virtue. It is hard to reward, it cannot be achieved in the formal sense, and it is often lost as it is directly pursued. Humility cannot stand on stage or spectacle and therefore cannot be apprehended the way generosity or even love can be. In other words, it is not gained by a direct campaign but is somehow a product of something else. Elusive: The Pursuit of Jesus and Humility is about that "something else." It is about imitating the life of Jesus. A life that was quintessentially humble.

Leffler argues that American officials did not disregard European developments after World War I but, rather, they sought to settle the war debt and reparations controversies, to stabilize European currencies, and to revive European markets. Leffler bridges the gap between revisionist and traditionalist studies by integrating the diverse aspects of foreign policy and elucidates many new aspects of the foreign policymaking process in the postwar period. "Christians who take the Bible seriously dare not ignore this message. Paul Nyquist writes like an Old Testament prophet in modern America . . . ” — Leith Anderson, president, National Association of Evangelicals | Washington, DC “Paul Nyquist brings a biblical focus and discerning look at why justice matters and how we might worktoward it.”- Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Chair | Wheaton College “… [Explains] why justice often eludes us in this life, but also how we must work to achieve it as best we can.”— Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer, pastor emeritus, The Moody Church | Chicago Why is justice so hard to come by? The innocent are convicted. The guilty get away. The scales tip toward the powerful, while the weak remain oppressed. If our world is so sophisticated, why is there so much injustice? What can believers do? Can we ever expect justice? Dr. Paul Nyquist, former president of Moody Bible Institute, addresses these questions and more in his new book, Is Justice Possible? In four parts he considers: Biblical and theological foundations of justice Obstacles to justice in human society Practical steps for pursuing justice in political, personal, and public arenas The hope of true justice upon Christ’s return As police shootings and wrongful incarcerations raise increasing questions in the minds of Christians, Is Justice Possible? will seek to provide answers and establish biblical expectations. At its core, this is a book about an attribute of God. Rather than rely on our own ideas of justice, we must look to the One who made us and embodies justice perfectly. Only then can we pursue justice in purposeful, effective, eternal ways.

Happiness is something we hear about every day. We hear people say it all the time "I'm happy about it," "We are a happy family," "I'm not happy" and on and on. Yet we hear it in the movies and in songs that we want to be happy, to find happiness, and we think we know what that is and we think we know where it is hiding. If we could only get that one thing, that thing that will turn our life around and then we could be happy forever. No more sadness. When I ask people if they're happy I always get the proverbial deer in the headlights look because the question stumps them and it stumped me too for about 60 years but I believe I have found the answer and I definitely know how to answer that question now if I were to be asked. Chasing the rainbow to find that pot of gold or that treasure chest of happiness just isn't going to happen but it's not all bad news. Actually it's good news because I believe that anyone can get closer to having complete happiness just by recognizing how to do it, where to find it, and how to disengage from those things in your life that make you unhappy. Once you read through this book you will understand what I mean and you will also be able to quickly answer the question as to whether you are happy or not without hesitation.

The Generative Power Of Hope written by Frederick Bird and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-26 with Philosophy categories.

This book analyses how and why we are living at a critical moment in the history of human life on earth and explores how we find grounds for the hopes that will enable us to address the challenges and crises of our time. The author analyses hope both practically and philosophically as a generative virtue to realistically discern the situations in which we find ourselves, and imaginatively to anticipate possibilities when the future is unknown and uncertain. The author argues that hope is a mean between anomy, disillusionment, and despair, on the one hand, and wishful thinking, dreaming, and fanaticizing, on the other hand. The book not only examines – and analyzes from a historical perspective - the contemporary crises such as climate change, environmental degradation and its effects such as the social costs of these developments, but also further analyzes the character and micro-dynamics of hope and how it makes a difference in how we manage the crises which inevitably emerge. Though contemporary crises are those we tend to focus on, the author also engages with what is involved in a due regard for history and the relevance of a sense of history for addressing the crises of our time. He shows us what we can learn from revisiting some thoughtful reflections by thinkers like Niebuhr, Jaspers, Camus, and Arendt. Finally, the author shows us what is involved practically in anticipating possibilities, by looking at hope as a social practice and noting how hopeful people make a difference.

The Bible And The Pursuit Of Happiness written by Brent A. Strawn and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-15 with Religion categories.

Scholars of the social sciences have devoted more and more attention of late to the concept of human happiness, mainly from sociological and psychological perspectives. This volume, which includes essays from scholars of the New Testament, the Old Testament, systematic theology, practical theology, and counseling psychology, poses a new and exciting question: what is happiness according to the Bible? Informed by developments in positive psychology, The Bible and the Pursuit of Happiness explores representations of happiness throughout the Bible and demonstrates the ways in which these representations affect both religious and secular understandings of happiness. In addition to the twelve essays, the book contains a framing introduction and epilogue, as well as an appendix of all the terms used in reference to happiness in the Bible. The resulting volume, the first of its kind, is a highly useful and remarkably comprehensive resource for the study of happiness in the Bible and beyond.

How mandated disclosure took over the regulatory landscape—and why it failed Perhaps no kind of regulation is more common or less useful than mandated disclosure—requiring one party to a transaction to give the other information. It is the iTunes terms you assent to, the doctor's consent form you sign, the pile of papers you get with your mortgage. Reading the terms, the form, and the papers is supposed to equip you to choose your purchase, your treatment, and your loan well. More Than You Wanted to Know surveys the evidence and finds that mandated disclosure rarely works. But how could it? Who reads these disclosures? Who understands them? Who uses them to make better choices? Omri Ben-Shahar and Carl Schneider put the regulatory problem in human terms. Most people find disclosures complex, obscure, and dull. Most people make choices by stripping information away, not layering it on. Most people find they can safely ignore most disclosures and that they lack the literacy to analyze them anyway. And so many disclosures are mandated that nobody could heed them all. Nor can all this be changed by simpler forms in plainer English, since complex things cannot be made simple by better writing. Furthermore, disclosure is a lawmakers' panacea, so they keep issuing new mandates and expanding old ones, often instead of taking on the hard work of writing regulations with bite. Timely and provocative, More Than You Wanted to Know takes on the form of regulation we encounter daily and asks why we must encounter it at all.
