This volume examines the work of Joan Littlewood, Giorgio Strehler and Roger Planchon, demonstrating how these 3 directors take up key aesthetic prompts from earlier innovators – Stanislavski, the modernist avant-garde and not least Brecht – and thereby prepare the ground for contemporary, politically-engaged 'directors' theatre'. It argues that, in creating their major productions in the prosperous 'glorious decades' that followed the devastation of the Second World War, they represent a first expressly 'European' generation of theatre directors. Revisiting works from the classical dramatic canon by drawing on popular theatre traditions, and reaching out to spectators beyond the educated middle-class elite, they put theatre in the service of uniting a traumatized continent. This study posits that for Littlewood, Strehler and Planchon, theatre has the capacity to create communities.

«A un nuovo teatro, a un nuovo testo, a una nuova mentalità occorre un nuovo metro di rapporti e di legami tra pubblico e palcoscenico; soltanto accettando le nuove esigenze create dalle nuove conquiste si avvererà un teatro tecnicamente in aderenza con i tempi che stiamo vivendo, senza riserve.» Quando Giorgio Strehler scrive queste parole ha poco più di vent’anni e mancano pochi mesi al suo debutto alla regia; la sua creatura più importante, il Piccolo Teatro, nascerà solo alcuni anni dopo. Eppure in questo intervento ci sono già l’energia e la visione che caratterizzeranno tutta la sua produzione e, più in generale, il suo rapporto con la macchina teatrale: un «fare teatro» sempre legato alla necessità di esprimere opinioni, concetti, pensieri, dentro e fuori dall’arte, sempre con la massima onestà possibile. Un teatro necessario raccoglie una lunga riflessione del 1987, in cui il regista ripercorre i primi otto anni di vita del Piccolo Teatro, in dialogo con una selezione di testi e articoli – alcuni dei quali mai pubblicati prima – scritti tra il 1942 e il 1945. Sono testi in cui si sente nitida la sua voce di giovane intellettuale che medita su un paese ferito dalla guerra: spesso ironico, talora sprezzante, lo Strehler ventenne è tanto speranzoso per le innovazioni portate dai movimenti artistici nati nell’immediato dopoguerra, quanto critico nei confronti delle chiuse e reazionarie istituzioni culturali italiane. Questo volume ci offre così un ritratto inedito e doppio di uno dei più grandi registi italiani: del maestro consacrato, che si volge indietro al suo passato, e del giovane idealista, che fissa il domani con lo sguardo carico di possibilità. Perché, come scrive lo stesso Strehler: «Mai nulla cambia nel teatro. E cambia tutto. Mai la vita si ripete pur restando se stessa»
