En un esfuerzo por transformar la lectura de poesía este libro visita diversos tiempos y regiones, considerando que el presente ilumina retrospectivamente la mirada anticipatoria de los poetas mayores. La poesía conceptual de Martín Gubbins (Chile), Mario Montalbetti (Perú) y Andrés Anwandter (Chile) revela nexos entre lenguaje y capitalismo y nos recuerda la profundidad de la crisis que vivimos. La obra plástica y escrita del peruano Jorge Eduardo Eielson opera, en los años sesenta, una crítica de la modernidad funcionalista y desencarnada. Ofrece, además, una alternativa a la tecnoutopía modernizadora que los jóvenes poetas concretos brasileños (Augusto y Haroldo de Campos, Décio Pignatari) diseñaron en los años cincuenta y que luego cambiarían por múltiples líneas de investigación creativa. Las estrategias geopoéticas de Vicente Huidobro y Alberto Hidalgo fundan, en los años veinte, una economía política estética que desborda la herencia del Romanticismo y abre derroteros más allá de la misma simbolización. En las imágenes/texto que producen estos poetas descubrimos que lenguaje e imagen divergen e intentan reprimirse mutuamente. Este descubrimiento nos permite luego volver al dominio verbal y encontrar allí todo tipo de impurezas y escisiones. Así accedemos a un tipo de experiencia (poética) donde la materialidad del medio opone resistencia a la producción imbricada e indivisible de signo y mercancía, a la confluencia entre simbolización y capitalismo. Una resistencia a la legibilidad absoluta que el capital semiótico requiere - evidencia de que el terreno de la disputa y lo que está en juego es el lenguaje.

Roger Benjamin, drawing on a decade of research in untapped archives, introduces many unfamiliar paintings, posters, miniatures, and panoramas and discovers an art movement closely bound to French colonial expansion. Orientalist Aesthetics approaches the visual culture of exoticism by ranging across the decorative arts, colonial museums, traveling scholarships, and art criticism in the Salons of Paris and Algiers. Benjamin's rediscovery of the important Society of French Orientalist Painters provides a critical context for understanding a lush body of work, including that of indigenous Algerian artists never before discussed in English. The painter-critic Eugène Fromentin tackled the unfamiliar atmospheric conditions of the desert, Etienne Dinet sought a more truthful mode of ethnographic painting by converting to Islam, and Mohammed Racim melded the Persian miniature with Western perspective. Benjamin considers armchair Orientalists concocting dreams from studio bric-à-brac, naturalists who spent years living in the oases of the Sahara, and Fauve and Cubist travelers who transposed the discoveries of the Parisian Salons to create decors of indigenous figures and tropical plants. The network that linked these artists with writers and museum curators was influenced by a complex web of tourism, rapid travel across the Mediterranean, and the march of modernity into a colonized culture. This pioneering work traces the emergence of the modern and contemporary art of Muslim South Asia in relation to transnational modernism and in light of the region’s intellectual, cultural, and political developments. Art historian Iftikhar Dadi here explores the art and writings of major artists, men and women, ranging from the late colonial period to the era of independence and beyond. He looks at the stunningly diverse artistic production of key artists associated with Pakistan, including Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Zainul Abedin, Shakir Ali, Zubeida Agha, Sadequain, Rasheed Araeen, and Naiza Khan. Dadi shows how, beginning in the 1920s, these artists addressed the challenges of modernity by translating historical and contemporary intellectual conceptions into their work, reworking traditional approaches to the classical Islamic arts, and engaging the modernist approach towards subjective individuality in artistic expression. In the process, they dramatically reconfigured the visual arts of the region. By the 1930s, these artists had embarked on a sustained engagement with international modernism in a context of dizzying social and political change that included decolonization, the rise of mass media, and developments following the national independence of India and Pakistan in 1947.
