From the propagation of neural activity through synapses, to the integration of signals in the dendritic arbor, and the processes determining action potential generation, virtually all aspects of neural processing are plastic. This plasticity underlies the remarkable versatility and robustness of cortical circuits: it enables the brain to learn regularities in its sensory inputs, to remember the past, and to recover function after injury. While much of the research into learning and memory has focused on forms of Hebbian plasticity at excitatory synapses (LTD/LTP, STDP), several other plasticity mechanisms have been characterized experimentally, including the plasticity of inhibitory circuits (Kullmann, 2012), synaptic scaling (Turrigiano, 2011) and intrinsic plasticity (Zhang and Linden, 2003). However, our current understanding of the computational roles of these plasticity mechanisms remains rudimentary at best. While traditionally they are assumed to serve a homeostatic purpose, counterbalancing the destabilizing effects of Hebbian learning, recent work suggests that they can have a profound impact on circuit function (Savin 2010, Vogels 2011, Keck 2012). Hence, theoretical investigation into the functional implications of these mechanisms may shed new light on the computational principles at work in neural circuits. This Research Topic of Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience aims to bring together recent advances in theoretical modeling of different plasticity mechanisms and of their contributions to circuit function. Topics of interest include the computational roles of plasticity of inhibitory circuitry, metaplasticity, synaptic scaling, intrinsic plasticity, plasticity within the dendritic arbor and in particular studies on the interplay between homeostatic and Hebbian plasticity, and their joint contribution to network function.

Memory----the ability to transform transient information into a more persistent form--is a fundamental property of neural systems, allowing them to learn from experience. Memories are stored in a variety of substrates, from persistent neural activity to changes in synaptic weights. Experience may even alter the interactions of the molecular networks that support synaptic weight changes themselves. The processes by which memories are stored, maintained and transformed are dynamical, resulting from the interplay of the substrate elements across spatial and temporal scales, fast and slow. Here I use mathematical and computational methods to investigate the dynamics of the storage of a long-term memory during synaptic plasticity, the transfer of long-term memory between synaptic sites during systems consolidation, and the tuning of the rules for inducing synaptic plasticity as a result of metaplasticity. I perform a conceptual unification of short-term and long-term memory, which have long been considered unrelated phenomena, by demonstrating that the consolidation of graded long-term memories in persistent synaptic weight changes is conceptually analogous to the storage of graded memories in persistent neural activity in short-term (working) memory, both processes being described by line attractor dynamics and the operation of temporal integration. Finally, I propose biologically plausible mechanisms for a newly discovered form of metaplasticity that each generate associative synaptic plasticity rules tuned to different features of the correlation structure of inputs to a neuron.

For nearly four centuries, our understanding of human development has been controlled by the debate between nativism and empiricism. Nowhere has the contrast between these apparent alternatives been sharper than in the study of language acquisition. However, as more is learned about the details of language learning, it is found that neither nativism nor empiricism provides guidance about the ways in which complexity arises from the interaction of simpler developmental forces. For example, the child's first guesses about word meanings arise from the interplay between parental guidance, the child's perceptual preferences, and neuronal support for information storage and retrieval. As soon as the shape of the child's lexicon emerges from these more basic forces, an exploration of "emergentism" as a new alternative to nativism and empiricism is ready to begin. This book presents a series of emergentist accounts of language acquisition. Each case shows how a few simple, basic processes give rise to new levels of language complexity. The aspects of language examined here include auditory representations, phonological and articulatory processes, lexical semantics, ambiguity processing, grammaticality judgment, and sentence comprehension. The approaches that are invoked to account formally for emergent patterns include neural network theory, dynamic systems, linguistic functionalism, construction grammar, optimality theory, and statistically-driven learning. The excitement of this work lies both in the discovery of new emergent patterns and in the integration of theoretical frameworks that can formalize the theory of emergentism.
