Viruses are transmitted directly and/or indirectly from human to human and from animal to human. In host cells, virus replication frequently results in an accumulation of mutations, reassortments, and homologous and heterologous recombinations, contributing to their rapid adaptation to environmental changes, often causing the emergence of new virus variants or species. These viral characteristics, in addition to spillover events, have resulted recently in an increasing number of outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. The emergence and re-emergence of novel pathogens challenges public health in regard to the development of new diagnostic methods, therapeutics, and prevention strategies and maintaining efficient epidemiological surveillance.

This reference book offers an in-depth analysis of the fundamental aspects, causative agents, and clinical manifestations of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of viral origin (EID-REID). It elucidates the role of evolutionary processes in the emergence, adaptation, and dissemination of pathogens. The initial chapter explores the causative agents behind EID-REID, providing a comprehensive overview of their origins, characteristics, and modes of transmission. The book further presents the structure, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of various viral pathogens, including notable viruses such as the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever Orthonairovirus (CCHFV), Rift Valley fever virus, Lassa virus, Nipah virus (NiV), Filoviridae, and coronaviruses (MERS, SARS, SARS-CoV-2). Additionally, the book elucidates the multifaceted landscape of treatment strategies, highlighting the pivotal role of pharmacological strategies, investigational drugs, vaccines, and immunomodulatory approaches. It also underscores the importance of clinical examination, immunoassays, and molecular diagnostic techniques for the early detection and accurate diagnosis of viral EID-REID. Toward the end, the book sheds light on the pivotal role of the Ayurveda, homoeopathic system of medicine, medical nutrition therapy, computational biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology in advancing disease management paradigms. This book is intended for epidemiologists, virologists, infectious disease specialists, and other healthcare practitioners who seek in-depth knowledge about emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

The purpose of this fifth volume in the Global Virology series is to describe and propose vaccines, focusing primarily on viral vaccines. In addition to human vaccines, animal viral vaccines are included since animals are used in vaccine research, and the spread of diseases to, from, and among animals, birds, and humans permeates the ecosystem. Due to climatic, geographical, and social factors, there is increased global spread of viruses and other infectious agents. Contributory factors include global warming, spread of vectors, increased human travel, encroachment into animal and avian environments, war, pestilence, malnutrition, and environmental, economic, and social collapse. GVV will address vaccines for many of the viruses addressed in previous series volumes, as well as for viruses not previously covered, and novel and future vaccine technologies. Advances in vaccine effectiveness and molecular engineering approaches are included, such as gene therapy, and CRISPR technologies.
