This paper studies growth patterns in Emerging Market Economies (EMs) from the perspective on clusters and taxonomies. First, it documents developments over the past five decades in EMs and uses a cluster analysis to better understand convergence and the investment-growth nexus. Second, it looks at the performance of EMs since 2000 and develops a taxonomy to classify countries according to their factor endowments as well as their real and financial external linkages. The taxonomy offers insights on growth dynamics pre and post the global financial crisis. Results highlight the high degree of heterogeneity in EMs and the need for more granular and targeted near and long-term policy advice.

Despite their heterogeneity, the countries share a number of common macroeconomic, financial, and structural challenges. The book also analyses a number of financial sector and monetary policy framework issues.

Victor Silverio Posadas Hernandez explores three sets of questions: What are the investment laws in the Latin American emerging markets (LAEM) and how do they compare to those of developed countries? How heterogeneous are the implicit trading costs in the LAEM and which factors are responsible for the heterogeneity? How does the predictability of stock returns in the LAEM differ from those documented for developed markets?

Inequality And Growth written by Francesco Grigoli and has been published by International Monetary Fund this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-18 with Business & Economics categories.

The combination of stagnant growth and high levels of income inequality renewed the debate about whether a more even distribution of income can spur economic activity. This paper tests for cross-country convergence in income inequality and estimates its impact on economic growth with a heterogeneous panel structural vector autoregression model, which addresses some empirical challenges plaguing the literature. We find that income inequality is converging across countries, and that its impact on economic growth is heterogeneous. In particular, while the median response of real per capita GDP growth to shocks in income inequality is negative and significant, the dispersion around the estimates is large, with at least one fourth of the countries in the sample presenting a positive effect. The results suggest that the negative effect is mainly driven by the Middle East and Central Asia and the Western Hemisphere across regions, and emerging markets across income levels. Finally, we find evidence that improved institutional frameworks can reduce the negative effect of income inequality on growth.

In this paper we provide short- and long-run tax buoyancy estimates for 107 countries (distributed between advanced, emerging and low-income) for the period 1980–2014. By means of Fully-Modified OLS and (Pooled) Mean Group estimators, we find that: i) for advanced economies both long-run and short-run buoyancies are not different from one; ii) long run tax buoyancy exceeds one in the case of CIT for advanced economies, PIT and SSC in emerging markets, and TGS for low income countries, iii) in advanced countries (emerging market economies) CIT (CIT and TGS) buoyancy is larger during contractions than during times of economic expansions; iv) both trade openness and human capital increase buoyancy while inflation and output volatility decrease it.

Emerging Multinationals From Asia And Europe written by Yumiko Nakahara and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-31 with Business & Economics categories.

This is the first book that provides a comprehensive inter-regional comparison of Asian and European multinationals from large (China and Russia) and medium-sized (Taiwan) emerging markets. Utilizing novel findings of the top-notch theoretical research on internationalization of emerging market multinational enterprises, the book shows selected empirical evidence that some emerging multinationals from the respective countries have successfully nurtured their competitive advantages by an effective synthesis of both globalization and domestic market benefits. Multinational enterprises from emerging markets have become an essential part of the world economy in the twenty-first century. The book introduces distinctive examples of emerging market multinationals from Asia and Europe that are no longer simple suppliers to the world-famous brand firms from developed countries. The book is a rarity in that it attempts to link the micro-analysis of specific features and strategies of emerging multinationals with the macro-analysis of foreign direct investment and global value chain participation of the respective countries. The book is valuable for both scholars and students in the fields of international business, international economics, and international political economy as well as for businesspeople aiming to enhance their understanding of the heterogeneity and complexity of multinationals from emerging markets.

Financial Development And Dynamic Investment Behavior written by Inessa Love and has been published by World Bank Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Business enterprises categories.

The authors apply vector autoregression to firm-level panel data from 36 countries to study the dynamic relationship between firms' financial conditions and investment. They argue that by using orthogonalized impulse-response functions they are able to separate the "fundamental factors" (such as marginal profitability of investment) from the "financial factors" (such as availability of internal finance) that influence the level of investment. The authors find that the impact of the financial factors on investment, which they interpret as evidence of financing constraints, is significantly larger in countries with less developed financial systems. The finding emphasizes the role of financial development in improving capital allocation and growth.

This book presents a multi-market framework of market and policy analysis that explicitly accounts for the empirically relevant heterogeneity in consumer preferences and producer characteristics. The explicit consideration of consumer and producer heterogeneity represents a significant departure from the representative consumer and producer that have been at the center of most of the literature on market and policy analysis, and enables the distributional impacts of changes in market conditions and policies to be fully identified. The framework is used to analyze the system-wide market and welfare impacts of a number of changes in market conditions (like changes in consumer preferences, costs and market structure) and policies (like subsidies and taxes) on one of the products in the system. Consistent with a priori expectations, the use of the framework unveils impacts masked by the conventional market and policy analysis.
