This book offers a variety of case studies and review articles that provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the latest in micropollutant assessment and remediation. The purpose of this book is to discuss the challenges that have arisen due to micropollutants, their harmful effects on the ecosystem, and techniques used for the management. The book focuses on the role of advanced green engineering technologies for sustainable management in building an economically supportable society as a basic need of developing countries. Micropollutants present a formidable threat to the environment, manifesting in various challenges that compromise ecological integrity and human well-being. It is generated from industrial, agricultural, or urban activities, can contaminate water bodies and soil, which effect the balance of ecosystems. The insidious nature of micropollutants lies in their capacity to bioaccumulate, posing long-term risks as they move up the food chain, ultimately impacting human health through contaminated food and water sources. Furthermore, the persistence of certain micropollutants in the environment increases concerns, as their effects encounter for long periods. Additionally, the global transport of these pollutants through air and water currents leads to widespread contamination. Detecting and regulating micropollutants prove challenging due to their low concentrations, posing obstacles to timely intervention and effective mitigation. The urgency to address this environmental menace is underscored by its pervasive influence on aquatic life, biodiversity, and the intricate interconnectedness of ecosystems.

The rapid growth of industrial, urban, and agricultural activities has given rise to a new class of environmental threats—Emerging Micropollutants (EMPs). Found in everything from pharmaceuticals and personal care products to plastics and pesticides, these contaminants are now being detected in air, water, soil, and even food, raising serious concerns for biodiversity, ecosystem health, and human well-being. Yet, with minimal regulation and undefined safety thresholds, EMPs continue to silently accumulate, especially in agro-ecosystems that are vital to global food and nutrition security. This book offers a comprehensive and timely exploration of Emerging Micropollutants (EMPs) in agricultural environments—tracking their origins, environmental behavior, health risks, and cutting-edge solutions. Structured into five in-depth sections, it examines the identification and fate of various EMPs in agro-ecosystems, and unpacks the health threats they pose to soil biodiversity, aquatic systems, and human populations through the food chain. It evaluates the efficiency and limitations of physical, chemical, and biological approaches for reducing EMP contamination, while emphasizing the crucial role of plant-microbe partnerships in ecosystem restoration. The book also looks ahead, highlighting how advanced technologies, forward-thinking policy-making, and public awareness can drive long-term environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture. Bridging scientific depth with practical insight, this volume is an essential resource for researchers, environmental professionals, and policymakers working to secure healthier soils, safer food, and a cleaner future.• Trace the full life cycle of emerging micropollutants (EMPs) in agriculture—from their sources to their impact.• Discover a variety of physical, chemical, and biological methods, with a focus on nature-driven solutions like plant-microbe interactions for sustainable agriculture.• Equip yourself with next-gen tools like omics technologies and AI monitoring to tackle EMP contamination and promote sustainable agro-ecosystems.

Treatment Of Micropollutants In Water And Wastewater written by Jurate Virkutyte and has been published by IWA Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-14 with Science categories.
Over the last few years there has been a growing concern over the increasing concentration of micropollutants originating from a great variety of sources including pharmaceutical, chemical engineering and personal care product industries in rivers, lakes, soil and groundwater. As most of the micropollutants are polar and persistent compounds, they are only partially or not at all removed from wastewater and thus can enter the environment posing a great risk to the biota. It is hypothesized that wastewater is one of the most important point sources for micropollutants. Treatment of Micropollutants in Water and Wastewater gives a comprehensive overview of modern analytical methods and will summarize novel single and hybrid methods to remove continuously emerging contaminants - micropollutants from the aqueous phase. New trends (e.g. sensor technology, nanotechnology and hybrid treatment technologies) are described in detail. The book is very timely because the new techniques are still in the development phase and have to be realized not only in the laboratory but also on a larger scale. The content of the book is divided into chapters that present current descriptive and analytical methods that are available to detect and measure micropollutants together with detailed information on various chemical, biological and physicochemical methods that have evolved over the last few decades. Treatment of Micropollutants in Water and Wastewater will also enable readers to make well informed choices through providing an understanding of why and how micropollutants must be removed from water sources, and what are the most appropriate and available techniques for providing a cost and technologically effective and sustainable solutions for reaching the goal of micropollutant-free water and wastewater. The book will be suitable for water and wastewater professionals as well for students and researchers in civil engineering, environmental engineering and process engineering fields.
