Latent knowledge in the field of pig reproduction is vast but scattered, making it difficult to take in all information at a glance. Moreover, nascent branches in biotechnology cannot grow if deprived of roots. The book Boar Reproduction: Fundamentals and New Biotechnological Trends links the past, the present and the emerging scientific research fields on reproductive biotechnology, offering a rigorous but easy to follow compilation of topics, from “old favorites” to the latest advances. The book is organized in three parts. The chapters of the first and second part cover various biological aspects of boar spermatozoa within the male, and within the female environments, respectively. The most common laboratory and artificial insemination techniques are discussed in the third part. As an additional feature, some chapters focus on the basis of a technology transfer to bring research expertise from basic science to the market, making the information provided in this book suitable for academic, research and other professional applications.

Arthur L. Caplan It is commonly said, especially when the subject is assisted reproduction, that medical technology has out stripped our morality. Yet, as the essays in this volume make clear, that is not an accurate assessment of the situ ation. Medical technology has not overwhelmed our moral ity. It would be more accurate to say that our society has not yet achieved consensus about the complex ethical iss ues that arise when medicine tries to assist those who seek its services in order to reproduce. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of ethical opinion about what we ought to do with respect to the use of surrogate mothers, in vitro fertil ization, embryo transfer, artificial insemination, or fertil ity drugs. Nor is it entirely accurate to describe assisted repro duction as technology. The term "technology" carries with it connotations of machines buzzing and technicians scurrying about trying to control a vast array of equip ment. Yet, most of the methods used to assist reproduc tion that are discussed in this volume do not involve exotic technologies or complicated hardware. It is technique, more than technology, that dominates the field of assisted reproduction. Efforts to help the infertile by means of the manipu lation of human reproductive materials and organs date 1 2 Caplan back at least to Biblical times. Human beings have en gaged in all manner of sexual practices and manipulations in attempts to achieve reproduction when nature has balked at allowing life to begin.

Redefining Human Life written by Robert H. Blank and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-09 with Human reproductive technology categories.

This book examines critical social-policy issues emerging from recent developments in human reproductive technology. Although considerable attention has been focused on the ethical dimensions of these developments, the policy dimension has largely been obscured. Dr. Blank now provides a far-ranging overview of the cumulative impact on society of a wide array of new reproductive technologies and the social patterns that accompany or precede their application. The book begins with a description of the current context of reproductive decision making. Dr. Blank demonstrates how emerging technologies are producing complex and intense social-policy concerns, then reviews in detail human reproductive technologies, and illustrates the significant consequences of technological innovations for political and legal concepts of rights and obligations. (Examples include recent cases involving torts for wrongful life.) He analyzes possible alterations in the moral and legal status of the fetus in light of apparent technological and social-policy trends and presents a paradigm of fetal rights that reflects these changes. A final case is made for a comprehensive assessment of reproductive technologies, as well as for the urgent need to refine concepts of human life that in the past have been taken for granted, but that now are being challenged.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women all contain certain principles which Canada, as a party to these treaties, is obligated to respect. This paper identifies those substantive rights which may be applicable to the area of new reproductive technologies, and suggests avenues for research to determine their implications for what legislatures may do within the terms and spirit of the conventions by which Canada is bound. The right to life; to liberty and security; to marry and found a family; to private and family life; to information and education; to reproductive health and health care; to the benefits of scientific progress; and to sexual non-discrimination, may all have relevance to the field of new reproductive technologies.

"The first paper in this volume of studies presents the ethical framework the Commission adopted: a modified ethic of care and a set of guiding principles that were used as a prism through which to view the technologies. The volume then goes on to explore some of the ethical issues raised by the development and use of new reproductive technologies."--
