New Morning brings together philosophers, poets, and literary critics to celebrate and engage the ideas of the great American writer and philosopher, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson's legacy influences many areas; he was a champion of democracy and civil rights, a naturalist, an idealist, an artist, a writer, and a philosopher. Rather than focusing on Emerson in his historical context, this volume brings to light the ways in which Emerson's voice and work still speak powerfully to the concerns of the present moment. In short essays and poems, some of America's most influential scholars and poets—including John J. McDermott, Mary Oliver, Mark Strand, Robert C. Pollock, Gary Snyder, and Lawrence Buell—underscore the relevance of Emerson's thought to contemporary issues as varied as the environment, race, politics, spirituality, aesthetics, and education.

Metaphors are ubiquitous and yet-or, for that very reason-go largely unseen. We are all variously susceptible to a blindness or blurry vision of metaphors; yet even when they are seen clearly, we are left to situate the ambiguities, conflations and contradictions they regularly present-logically, aesthetically and morally. David LaRocca's book serves as a set of 'reminders' of certain features of the natural history of our language-especially the tropes that permeate and define it. As part of his investigation, LaRocca turns to Ralph Waldo Emerson's only book on a single topic, English Traits (1856), which teems with genealogical and generative metaphors-blood, birth, plants, parents, family, names and race. In the first book-length study of English Traits in over half a century, LaRocca considers the presence of metaphors in Emerson's fertile text-a unique work in his expansive corpus, and one that is regularly overlooked. As metaphors are encountered in Emerson's book, and drawn from a long history of usage in work by others, a reader may realize (or remember) what is inherent and encoded in our language, but rarely seen: how metaphors circulate in speech and through texts to become the lifeblood of thought.

The American Transcendentalists: Essential Writings (Modern Library Classics) Paperback - January 10, 2006 by Ralph Waldo Emerson Transcendentalism was the first major intellectual movement in U.S. history, championing the inherent divinity of each individual, as well as the value of collective social action. In the mid-nineteenth century, the movement took off, changing how Americans thought about religion, literature, the natural world, class distinctions, the role of women, and the existence of slavery. Edited by the eminent scholar Lawrence Buell, this comprehensive anthology contains the essential writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and their fellow visionaries. There are also reflections on the movement by Charles Dickens, Henry James, Walt Whitman, Louisa May Alcott, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This remarkable volume introduces the radical innovations of a brilliant group of thinkers whose impact on religious thought, social reform, philosophy, and literature continues to reverberate in the twenty-first century. This study contextualizes Ralph Waldo Emerson's application and appreciation of Confucian motifs and quotations in his journals, sermons, lectures, and publications from 1830-1843, and argues against the majority of published investigations into Emerson's Oriental interests. The majority of scholarly investigations into Emerson's Oriental interests, from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century, consider Emerson's application of Confucian motifs and quotations to be aesthetic tropes or rhetorical devices without any philosophical influence upon Emerson's early writings (1830-1843). Conversely, this dissertation advances Emerson's holistic and rather cosmopolitan integration of motifs from numerous world sages with his own philosophical and spiritual views, which includes Confucian motifs, prior to his seminal work Nature (1836), his famous speeches "The American Scholar" (1837) and "The Divinity School Address" (1838), and his Essays: First Series (1841). Emerson first read a translation of Confucius in 1830 and he noted motifs and direct quotations from the Chinese Sage in his journals; those motifs ended up in Emerson's sermons, lectures, and essays from 1832 onward. To date, Emerson's sermons have not been referenced by scholarly publications concerned with Emerson's Oriental motifs, and no scholarship has argued for the presence of Confucian motifs in Nature. Therefore, this study applies empirical textual evidence to contradict the dismissal and/or marginalization of the presence of Confucian motifs in Emerson's works prior to 1843. The majority of scholars tend to address the presence and influence of Hindu texts and philosophy in Emerson's work and allot approximately ten pages of discussion on Hindu motifs to every one page on Confucius or Chinese motifs. Such disparity in analysis and investigation of Emerson's interests reflects cultural attitudes toward Confucius and China, which became associated with Emerson due to his public praise of Confucius, as articles from magazines and newspapers of the eighteenth and early-nineteenth century in this current investigation illustrate. Undoubtedly, this dissertation benefits from access to modern research tools, such as, internet searches, electronic archives, and newspaper/magazine databases, which have produced previously unexplored sources that speak to the importance of Confucian motifs and Confucian quotations in the early writings (1830-1843) of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Dr. Ruth L. Miller interprets a few essential essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson that tell us how the world always responds to our thoughts, words, and actions, and what we can do to ensure that our life is truly joy-filled in all aspects. In clear, simple language, she gives us a direct sense of what Emerson felt, saw, and struggled to share with his fellow human beings. Emerson transcended the limitations of his day. Using common sense, a love of nature, and his own particular genius, he expressed a higher truth about who we are and how the world gives us exactly what we demand from it. Yet, perhaps because he was so popular, and because so much of what was popularized focused on the need to transcend materialism and reconnect with Nature, some of his core ideas were lost to later generations. They were there, buried in the long sentences and extended paragraphs of his often-overlooked essays—but were discovered only by the few who were willing to take the time and seek them out. These few became great teachers in their own right, the founders and leaders of institutions and movements that have changed history. Natural Abundance makes the hidden treasures of Emerson’s wisdom accessible to 21st century readers. Through it, this great man’s alignment of his heart’s knowing and his intellect’s understanding can lead all of us to a more abundantly fulfilling life, today.

The Spiritual Emerson written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and has been published by Beacon Press (MA) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Literary Collections categories.

The first collection of Emerson"s spiritual writings, published for the 200th anniversary of the writer"s birth Matthew Arnold once described Ralph Waldo Emerson as "the friend and aider of all those who would live in the spirit." Arnold"s comment captured the impact that Emerson had as a teacher of a new form of spirituality in the nineteenth century. Emerson proposed a new religious vision that made the spiritual life freshly accessible to people. In our current era, Emerson continues to speak with a compelling voice. Known best in the twenty-first century as a literary innovator and early architect of American intellectual culture, Emerson"s writings still offer spiritual sustenance to the thoughtful reader. The Spiritual Emerson brings together the essays and lectures that best articulate Emerson"s spiritual vision, and promise the greatest relevance to today"s reader. Compiled and introduced by David M. Robinson, one of the leading authorities on Emerson, The Spiritual Emerson will be both a portrait of Emerson as a spiritual teacher and a sourcebook for all those who find his ideas and convictions useful in their own efforts to live in the spirit. "This collection brings together for the first time Emerson's most important writings on spiritual themes, along with a discerning and eminently readable introduction by one of the foremost authorities on Emerson's religious thought." --Lawrence Buell, Harvard University, author of LITERARY TRANSCENDENTALISM and EMERSON "Simply the best selection ever made from the spiritual writings of America"s most influential sage. Combining familiar essays with the oft-neglected, from both the early and the later Emerson, Robinson reveals the paradoxes that shaped one soul then and continue to shape many today. For all who still care for the soul, essential reading." --John Buehrens, author of UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE "THE SPIRITUAL EMERSON is a superb and timely collection, one that will help to elucidate and consolidate our understanding of Emerson's spirituality on the occasion of his 200th birthday celebration. Accessibly framed and introduced by David Robinson, our premier scholar of the religious context and character of Emersonian Transcendentalism, this elegantly appointed volume will help open the way to a fuller understanding of the heart of Emerson's thought. Drawn together chronologically from every period of Emerson's long and productive career, the essays contained here provide a sound basis for a better understanding of the life-long evolution of his religious and moral philosophy." --Alan Hodder, Hampshire College "David Robinson is our leading interpreter of the later Emerson's pragmatic turn toward an 'ever greater conviction that ethical action [is] not a by-product of religious belief, but the very core of religion itself.' Robinson has for years been calling attention to Emerson as a religious figure, not just a literary or philosophical one. Now he has, in THE SPIRITUAL EMERSON, provided us with a guided anthology that takes the reader through Emerson's own spiritual evolution. Robinson's Emerson is an urgent seeker, outspoken, socially committed and publically responsible. Robinson's Emerson is a person we can--and should-- be learning from. Robinson is persuasive in his belief that Emersonianism is--especially now--a live option for us." --Robert D. Richardson, author of Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind and Emerson: The Mind on Fire David M. Robinson is a leading authority on Emerson and the New England transcendentalist movement. He is the author of numerous books, including Emerson and the Conduct of Life, The Unitarians and the Universalists, and Apostle of Culture: Emerson as Preacher and Lecturer. He is Oregon Professor of English and head of the American studies program at Oregon State University, in Corvallis.

The Young American Ralph Waldo Emerson Dissent: The History of an American Idea examines the key role dissent has played in shaping the United States. It focuses on those who, from colonial days to the present, dissented against the ruling paradigm of their time: from the Puritan Anne Hutchinson and Native American chief Powhatan in the seventeenth century, to the Occupy and Tea Party movements in the twenty-first century. The emphasis is on the way Americans, celebrated figures and anonymous ordinary citizens, responded to what they saw as the injustices that prevented them from fully experiencing their vision of America. In his 1837 speech "The American Scholar," Ralph Waldo Emerson noted, "life is our dictionary," encapsulating a body of work that reached well beyond the American 19th century. This comprehensive study explores Emerson as a preacher, poet, philosopher, lecturer, essayist and editor. There are nearly 100 entries on individual texts and their personal, historical and literary contexts. Emerson's work is placed within his relationships with family members, fellow Transcendentalists and transatlantic friends, and his commitment to ethics, self-culture and social change. This book provides the fullest possible exploration of Emerson's writing and philosophy. Far ahead of his own time, the man enthusiastically questioned institutions, communities, friendships, history, individuality and contemporaneous approaches to environmental stewardship.
