Expressionist painter Emil Nolde (1867-1956) was a trailblazing virtuoso of watercolor painting. Applying paint to paper with incomparable intensity, he created richly luminous paintings of brooding, romantic landscapes and alienating modern city scenes. The sea occupies a singularly important place in his oeuvre; Nolde began painting sea watercolors around 1920. Kraftvolle Bildsprache im Einklang mit leuchtenden Farben bilden die Basis für seinen unverkennbaren Malstil. Diese Auswahl der Ausstellung umfasst anhand von 15 Papierarbeiten eine Reihe von Themen, wie Landschaften, Blumen, Stillleben und Figuren. Mehrere der gezeigten Werke gehören zu der Gruppe der sogenannten "Ungemalten Bilder", die Nolde in seinem Haus in Seebüll in der Zeit zwischen 1938 und 1945 schuf, als die Nazis seine Werke als "entartete Kunst" deklarierten, sie aus Museen entfernten und ihm das Malen verboten. Obwohl man Noldes nationalsozialistische Einstellung nicht verleugnen kann, erinnert Hilton Kramer 1963 in einem Artikel für die 'Art in America' die Leser daran, dass es "charakteristisch für Nolde sei, dass er niemals seine Werke abänderte, um sie der Nazi-Ideologie anzupassen, die er sonst als geistesverwandt zu seinem eigenen Wesen empfand." As they trace Nolde's path from a small village in Denmark to his evolution into a prestigious artist, noted Nolde experts Christian Ring and Hans-Joachim Throl explore Nolde's world of color--as seen in his paintings of gardens, landscapes, and seas--and consider his use of the fantastic and grotesque in his work.
