Excerpt from Emile Durkheim and His Sociology Part II discusses only a few of the problems raised by Durk heim's conception of the nature, scope, and method of soci ology. Our main effort here is to indicate the advantages of Durkheim's broad view of sociology as a positive science of social behavior, as a rejuvenating method of social investiga tion, and as a solid foundation for an integral social philosophy. Sociology must don overalls and dig deeply for the fact-stuff that is its life-blood. But it must also, without trepidation, soar into the higher regions of rational thought whence alone come proper synthesis and integration. Emile Durkheim written by Steven Lukes and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1985 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This study of Durkheim seeks to help the reader to achieve a historical understanding of his ideas and to form critical judgments about their value. To some extent these tow aims are contradictory. On the one hand, one seeks to understand: what did Durkheim really mean, how did he see the world, how did his ideas related to one another and how did they develop, how did they related to their biographical and historical context, how were they received, what influence did they have and to what criticism were they subjected, what was it like not to make certain distinctions, not to see certain errors, of fact or of logic, not to know what has subsequently become known? On the other hand, one seeks to assess: how valuable and how valid are the ideas, to what fruitful insights and explanations do they lead, how do they stand up to analysis and to the evidence, what is their present value? Yet it seems that it is only by inducing oneself not to see and only by seeing them that one can make a critical assessment. The only solution is to pursue both aims--seeing and not seeing--simultaneously. More particularly, this book has the primary object of achieving that sympathetic understanding without which no adequate critical assessment is possible. It is a study in intellectual history which is also intended as a contribution to sociological theory.

This book proposes a new representation of Emile Durkheim, as the philosopher and moralist who wanted to renovate rationalism, challenge positivism, reform sociology, and extend Schopenhauer's philosophy to the new domain of sociology. Above all, it highlights Durkheim's vision of sociology as the 'science of morality' that would eventually replace moralities based on religion.

Excerpt from Émile Durkheim's Contributions to Sociological Theory As the title of this study suggests, the scope of it is relatively limited. "Sociological theory" has been taken to include the study of the psychological phenomena conditioned by man's social life; the method and scope of sociology; the problem of the conduct relations of the individual as a member of a social group; "social morphology"; the causes of social changes; in short, what is usually denominated "general" sociology. Into the field of Durkheim's specialized work on primitive social life no excursions have been made save for material illustrative of points coming up in the discussions of theory. Furthermore, no attempt has been made to attack the problem of the influences that have helped to shape our author's views. This question has been treated by M. Simon Deploige, with the result of an acrimonious argument between Deploige and Durkheim. This controversy will be considered later. It seems scarcely worth while to do more than to point out, in this connection, similarities between the thought of Durkheim and that of several other writers, and to accept his statement as to the origin of his ideas. Professor Émile Durkheim was born April 15, 1858. From 1879 to 1882 he was a student at the, École Normale Superieure. From 1882 to 1887 he served as professor of philosophy in various lycees. In 1887 he became a member of the Faculte des lettres of the Universite de Bordeaux, first as "charged d'un cours", later, in 1896, as Professor of Social Science. In 1902 he was called to Paris, serving at first as "charged d'un cours", and since 1906, as Professor of Sociology and the Science of Education in the Faculte des lettres in the Universite de Paris. A new appreciation of Durkheim, now into its fourth decade, has extended our grasp of his intellectual ambitions beyond standard academic boundaries. Contributions to this revival of interest in Durkheim, many secreted away in obscure periodicals, are well worth being recognized for their unqualified excellence in helping us to uncover the original Durkheimian intellectual project in all its interdisciplinary complexity. Besides classic Durkheimian subjects such as religion, social solidarity and suicide, these studies bring to light Durkheim's intellectual inquiry into political theory, comparative ethnology, social reconstruction, questions of civil society, and his articulation of an updated individualism in conversation with Marx, Hegel, Spencer and others. Authors who have helped us attain this more rounded conception of the Durkheimian project include such well-known figures as Robert N. Bellah, Robert Alun Jones, Anthony Giddens, W. S. F. Pickering and Edward Tiryakian. More than matching these contributions are the surprising writings by authors from across the disciplines, including such contemporaries of Durkheim as historian Henri Berr and theologian Alfred Loisy, as well as modern-day writers who deserve to be much better known, such as philosopher, John Brooks III or historian John Bossy. Although this collection is overwhelmingly drawn from sources in English, two classic critical pieces by French contemporaries of Durkheim enhance the value of this anthology.

A classic book about the phenomenon of suicide and its social causes written by one of the world’s most influential sociologists. Emile Durkheim’s Suicide addresses the phenomenon of suicide and its social causes. Written by one of the world’s most influential sociologists, this classic argues that suicide primarily results from a lack of integration of the individual into society. Suicide provides readers with an understanding of the impetus for suicide and its psychological impact on the victim, family, and society.
