This volume contains a selection of papers given at the European Science Foundation Exploratory Workshop on 'Emotion in Dialogic Interaction' at the University of Munster in October 2002. In the literature, the complex network of 'emotion in dialogic interaction' is mostly addressed by reducing the complex and separating emotions or defining them by means of simple artificial units. The innovative claim of the workshop was to analyse emotion as an integrated component of human behaviour in dialogic interaction as demonstrated by recent findings in neurology and to develop a linguistic model which is able to deal with the complex integrated whole. Specific emphasis was laid on communicative means for expressing emotions and on emotional principles in dialogue. Furthermore, the issue of specific European principles for dealing with emotions was highlighted.

Kenneth Burke, founder of the critical method of dramatism, believed that motives and attitudes are constantly generated by individuals as they encounter social situations and material objects in the course of their everyday lives. In The Rhetoric of Emotions, Robert Perinbanayagam proposes that by analysing individuals' experiences, especially through their interaction with creative outlets, we can come to a deeper understanding of how the human mind systematically approaches the emotive process.The author maintains that individuals use spoken language, and all other forms of symbolism, including art and literature, to elicit social cooperation and emotional understanding, both in regard to the world around them and within themselves. Rhetoric and culture are mechanisms for managing values, behaviour, and emotions. Interest in human emotion no longer equates to unscientific speculation. 21st-century humanities scholars are paying serious attention to our capacity to express emotions and giving rigorous explanations of affect in language. We are unquestionably witnessing an ‘emotional turn’ not only in linguistics, but also in other fields of scientific research. Emotion in Discourse follows from and reflects on this scholarly awakening to the world of emotion, and in particular, to its intricate relationship with human language. The book presents both the state of the art and the latest research in an effort to unravel the various workings of the expression of emotion in discourse. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, for emotion is a multifarious phenomenon whose functions in language are enlightened by such other disciplines as psychology, neurology, or communication studies. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Interest in emotions within organisation increased in the last years. However, research in this field is scarce. In the discussion about emotions in organisation the increasing number of multicultural teams is adding an additional variable: culture , making research even more complicate. Practitioners report that where culture meets conflicts accompanied by negative emotions such as anger occur. However, also positive emotions like happiness may occur, having a positive influence on motivation and enhance cohesion, what may be considered as benefit in multicultural teams. Although anger as well happiness are considered as universally experienced emotion, there is some evidence that the causes, expression, and the behaviour which follows anger and happiness are culturally influenced. In multicultural teams the knowledge about the antecedents of these two emotions and the following behaviour seems to be especially important as on one hand misunderstandings and conflict connected with anger, may have serious social consequences reducing performance or even resulting in contra productive behaviour threatening the organisation, and on the other hand experience of success and good communication, enhancing team collaboration, seems to be connected with happiness. This thesis aims to contribute to a better understanding with regards the culturally-influenced antecedents of the two emotions anger and happiness as well as about the resulting behavioural consequences in multicultural team settings. The two research questions guiding this work are: 1. In which multicultural team situations do the emotions anger and happiness arise? 2. Which are the antecedents, in team settings, of the two emotions and which is the resulting behaviour respectively consequences that follows? Ahead, the Theoretical Part should provide the reader a basic introduction about emotions and the connected relevant factors like cognition, sociality and culture with regard to the research questions.
