This volume draws together three core concerns for the social sciences: the senses and embodiment, emotions, and space and place. In so doing, these collected essays consider the ways in which these core concerns are mutually constitutive. This includes how spaces evoke, constrain or are composed by the senses and emotions; the ways in which emotions are generated or transformed in certain spaces and through sensual engagement; and the processes by which embodied senses create spaces and emotions.

This Sage Handbook presents an interdisciplinary collection of chapters exploring how to assess the quality of collecting and analysing qualitative data, while maintaining a focus on diversity, digital and critical approaches. The Handbook considers essential questions such as what is good qualitative research? What makes qualitative research good research? And, how can we make qualitative research better research? Contributions come from a wide array of experts, and highlight answers to questions from various disciplinary and geographical areas; from mixed methods to multimodal and online research, from specific types of data and methods to specific target groups, and from theoretical and epistemological contexts to those where funding has an impact on how research is done and assessed. Qualitative research has evolved in many respects in recent decades and has grown increasingly multidisciplinary. Research in general is facing new challenges around how to take diversity and decolonisation into account in what researchers do, as well as how to produce and communicate qualitative research quality. This Handbook offers a timely overview of such developments, and will support researchers involved in planning, designing, doing and evaluating qualitative research in developing an increased sensitivity for contemporary debates and challenges in the field. Part I Philosophies and Epistemologies of Qualitative Research Quality Part II Disciplinary Discourses of Qualitative Research Quality Part III Qualitative Research Quality for Specific Approaches Part IV Rethinking Qualitative Research Quality for Specific Methods and Data Part V Rethinking Strategies for Quality in Qualitative Research Part VI Rethinking Criteria for Quality in Qualitative Research Part VII Extending Contexts and Challenges for Qualitative Research Quality

The essays in this volume explore the nature of time, our God-given medium of ascent, known, as Augustine puts it, through the ordered study of the “liberal disciplines that carry the mind to the divine (disciplinae liberales intellectum efferunt ad divina)”: grammar and dialectic, for example, to promote thinking; geometry and astronomy to grasp the dimensions of our reality; music, an invisible substance like time itself, as an exemplary bridge to the unseen substance of thoughts, ideas, and the nature of God (theology). This ascending course of study rests on procedure, progress, and attainment — on before, following, and afterwards — whose goal is an ascending erudition that lets us finally contemplate, as Augustine says in De ordine, our invisible medium — time — within time itself: time is immaterial, but experienced as substantial. The essays here look at projects that chronicle time “from the beginning,” that clarify ideas of creation “in time” and “simultaneous times,” and the interrelationships between measured time and eternity, including “no-time.” Essays also examine time as revealed in social and political contexts, as told by clocks, as notated in music and embodied in memorializing stone. In the final essays of this volume, time is understood as the subject and medium of consciousness. As Adrian Bardon says, “time is not so much a ‘what’ as a ‘how’”: a solution to “organizing experience and modeling events.” Contributors are (in order within the volume) Jesse W. Torgerson, Ken A. Grant, Danielle B. Joyner, Nancy van Deusen, Peter Casarella, Aaron Canty, Jordan Kirk, Vera von der Osten-Sacken, Gerhard Jaritz, Jason Aleksander, Sara E. Melzer, Mark Howard, Andrew Eschelbacher, Hans J. Rindisbacher, James F. Knapp, Peggy A. Knapp, Raymond Knapp, Michael Cole, Ike Kamphof and Leonard Michael Koff.

The papers in this volume continue our focus on emotions of people in Southeast Europe. Grief and sadness are, of course, universal, but they take on different forms of expression. Strong emotional values are often attached to specific foods (e.g. the kurban), usually food is of great importance for labour migrants and in times of crisis. Likewise, dress can be of great emotional significance and value. Wars as well as communist collectivization often lead to emotional consequences such as trauma. Smells and tastes can become expressions of actual or remembered emotions, a fact that can also concern the researchers themselves.

In this volume you will find stories about hyperactive relics, ghosts in spiritual or bodily form, as well as accounts of the dead being conjured, resurrected, and brought back to life from decomposing matter. This is not so much for the purpose of assembling a kind of Neapolitan Wunderkammer, but rather to allow these bodies – in physical or spiritual form, or sometimes both at the same time – to speak as protagonists, and to offer their own contribution to the historical anthropology of the Kingdom of Naples. This volume explores the boundaries between body and spirit, life and death, as well as the natural, preternatural, and supernatural in the long early modern era in southern Italy.

Over the past decades, the growing interest in the study of literature of the city has led to the development of literary urban studies as a discipline in its own right. The Routledge Companion to Literary Urban Studies provides a methodical overview of the fundamentals of this developing discipline and a detailed outline of new directions in the field. It consists of 33 newly commissioned chapters that provide an outline of contemporary literary urban studies. The Companion covers all of the main theoretical approaches as well as key literary genres, with case studies covering a range of different geographical, cultural, and historical settings. The final chapters provide a window into new debates in the field. The three focal issues are key concepts and genres of literary urban studies; a reassessment and critique of classical urban studies theories and the canon of literary capitals; and methods for the analysis of cities in literature. The Routledge Companion to Literary Urban Studies provides the reader with practical insights into the methods and approaches that can be applied to the city in literature and serves as an important reference work for upper-level students and researchers working on city literature. Grief And Sorrow In The Roman World written by Anthony Smart and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-26 with History categories.
Engaging with the long history of emotions, this book provides a new narrative of how grief was defined, experienced and used in Ancient Rome. From studies of tears and weeping, to Roman funerary monuments and inscriptions, the role of female grief in navigating political conflict, and letters of consolation, Grief and Sorrow in the Roman World explores the language of grief and individuality of sorrow in Rome, and asks how and why they shaped their emotions in this way. Revisiting familiar sources such as Livy and Plutarch it offers new interpretations to place the Roman emotional framework against our own. Can we recognise our own notions of grief in the Ancient World? Do we feel pain in the same way as our Roman ancestors did? Exploring these questions and more, Anthony Smart challenges existing perceptions of grief and sorrow in the Roman world and places emotions at the centre of this rich culture.
