Los trabajos reunidos en esta obra pretenden dar a conocer mejor la historia social, la historia religiosa y la historia de las mentalidades de una de las épocas más apasionantes de la historia de Occidente: los siglos IV y V de nuestra era, el bajo Imperio romano, una época de paso, de contradicciones y contrastes. La transformación del Imperio romano en Imperio cristiano constituye uno de los acontecimientos que mejor caracterizan el final del mundo antiguo y el nacimiento de una nueva sociedad. El libro se articula también en torno a los principales protagonistas, los emperadores, que lo eran por la gracia de Dios; los obispos, que eran los únicos capaces de oponerse a sus omnipotentes deseos; los monjes, que adoptaron con frecuencia una actitud anticlerical que les atrajo el apoyo de las masas; y las mujeres, principalmente las ricas y culturalmente refinadas de la aristocracia, que mediante su ascetismo, alcanzaron un protagonismo que en pocos momentos de la historia han llegado a alcanzar. Fruto de su investigación en los últimos diez años, el autor se adentra por unos caminos poco transitados por la investigación de habla española, pero que atrae a un público con unas inquietudes culturales cada vez más diversificadas.

XIX d.C., el perfil sui generis de Mayoriano ha suscitado interés propio en algunos artículos específicos y en obras de conjunto, comenzando por la de Cantarelli en 1883. Se destaca sin duda alguna en el estudio de la normativa mayorianea la monografía de Oppedisano, quien desde su formación como historiador en el año 2013 ofreció una espléndida visión de conjunto del contexto político-militar, vida y obra de este Emperador, así como de su legislación.En esta investigación pongo especialmente el foco de atención en cuatro de las Novelas mayorianeas, publicadas entre los años 458 y 459 d.C., que afectan a la condición jurídica de las mujeres que le son coetáneas; abarcando con ello la descripción de modelos femeninos que conviven en un mismo espacio temporal y físico –el Imperio romano de Occidente–, pero dispares por su extracción social: Solteras, casadas, viudas, aristócratas y campesinas-colonas.

La presente obra aborda el origen histórico y la consolidación en la persona del papa de la doble condición de obispo de Roma y de la Iglesia universal. La institución, ¿tiene un origen humano o divino? O, dicho de otro modo, ¿debe ser objeto de estudio de los historiadores o de los teólogos? Los estudiosos que colaboran en este libro son conscientes de que la teología católica hace del papado una institución divina y de que su fundamento es el denominado "principio petrino": el papa, en cuanto sucesor de san Pedro, desempeña una primacía jerárquica y doctrinal que lo sitúa por encima de todos los obispos.
