Smart and speedy is vital to the success of organizations in increasingly changing set of the knowledge age. The expansion and practice of KM (knowledge management) is dramatically and continuously growing in firms. For reason of development in knowledge management, the speed for acquiring a competitive advantage by means of knowledge grows at faster rate as compared to the past. KM has also been demonstrated for its prospective contribution in creating SCA (sustained competitive advantages) for firms. The accusation that knowledge management might be able to generate SCA (sustained competitive advantage) for organizations is provoking; working in this field is relatively underdeveloped, both theoretically and empirically. The recent studies on competitive advantage and knowledge management have stressed description, rather than empirical research knowledge management could achieve to such an advantage. A possible or potential infrastructure for expanding the conceptual analysis of knowledge management’s impacts on firm's CA (competitive advantage) is the RBV (resource-based view) of the organization which relates the CA of firms with capabilities and resources that are difficult to imitate and firm-specific. The RBV is recently the commanding theoretical view in strategic management published literature, and it concerns with expensive attributes of an organization which are viewed as the basic pillars of SA (competitive advantage). In RBV (resource-based view), knowledge is viewed as a strategic benefit or asset with the outcome potential to be a source of SCA (sustainable competitive advantage) for a company. The RBV of the organization extends and builds upon the resource-based theory of the organization. It originally developed by Penrose (1959) and enlarged by others (Alavi and Leidner 2001). It encircles the aspects and features to knowledge combination or integration and the four initial method by which knowledge is arranged.

Most theories of competitive advantage seek to explain rent capture at the firm level but ignore which internal stakeholders will appropriate this rent. For example, IO economics focuses on market structure and the resource-based view focuses on unique firm-level capabilities that rivals cannot imitate or acquire. As researchers apply these frameworks, they either: 1) assume rent is captured by shareholders, 2) treat within-firm rent appropriation exogenously, or 3) ignore internal rent appropriation altogether. However, internal rent appropriation determines how much of the rent will be observable in measures of firm performance and is therefore central to empirical research focused on firm performance. What if rent from a competitive advantage is appropriated internally so it cannot be observed in performance measures? The resource-based view was not formulated to examine who will get the rent. Yet, this essay argues that the factors leading to a resource-based advantage also predict who will appropriate rent. Knowledge-based assets are promising as a source of sustainable advantage because firm-specificity, social complexity and causal ambiguity make them hard for rivals to imitate. Accordingly, these strong roles for internal stakeholders may grant them a great deal of bargaining power especially relative to investors who contribute the most fungible of all resources. This article integrates the resource-based view with the bargaining power literature by defining the firm as a nexus of contracts. This lens can help to explain when rent will be generated and, simultaneously, who will appropriate it. In doing so, it provides a more robust theory of firm performance than the resource-based view alone. This lens might also be useful for examining other theories of firm performance.

Understanding the origins of persistent superior firm performance has in the past few decades emerged as one of most important areas of research in the field of strategic management. Existing empirical studies on performance variability, however, remain inconclusive, and a significant portion of the variance in performance is still unexplained. The purpose of this dissertation is to deepen our understanding of the firm-level sources of sustained competitive advantage. It is one of the few empirical studies that attempt to explore firm-level sources of sustained competitive advantage from inside the organization. This study adopts a resource-based perspective and an exploratory multicase study research design to empirically explore and inductively analyse firm-level differences and their links to competitive advantage. The study is based on 26 semi-structured interviews with senior management team members, drawn from a purposive cross-sectional sample of 11 high-performing firms in Switzerland and adjacent countries. The findings of the study suggest that nine firm resources are most closely associated with competitive advantage: firm reputation, culture, brand reputation, management team, employees, relationships, innovation capability, controlling employee fluctuation, and national reputation. This study makes a number of significant theoretical and managerial contributions. Most notably, it indicates that much of the performance variance previous studies have failed to explain is attributable to firm resources that have heretofore been ignored or handled in an overly abstract manner, such as innovation capability and national reputation. The study also calls researchers' attention to performance-relevant resource characteristics, suggests that the links between resources and firm performance may be more complex than often assumed, and indicates that defining strategic resources in terms of their use value alleviates the problem of tautology that the RBV is sometimes claimed to suffer from. Finally, the study is of service to managers by suggesting firm resources that can lead to a sustained competitive advantage.

Empirical research in HRM has focused on such issues as recruiting, testing, selection, training, motivation, compensation, and employee well-being. A review of the literature on these and other topics suggests that less than optimal methods have often been used in many HRM studies. Among the methods-related problems are using (a) measures or manipulations that have little or no construct validity, (b) samples of units (e.g., participants, organizations) that bear little or no correspondence to target populations, (c) research designs that have little or no potential for supporting valid causal inferences, (d) samples that are too small to provide for adequate statistical power, and (e) data analytic strategies that are inappropriate for the issues addressed by a study. As a result, our understanding of various HRM phenomena has suffered and improved methods may serve to enhance both the science and practice of HRM. In view of the above, the purpose of this volume of Research in Human Resource Management is to provide basic and applied researchers with resources that will enable them to improve the internal validity, external validity, construct validity, and statistical conclusion validity of research in HRM and the related fields of industrial and organizational psychology, and organizational behavior.
