This work contributes to entrepreneurship research and offers practical implications for entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship promotors by critically analyzing a networked approach to value creation processes of young knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial firms and assessing precise strategies and tactics for entrepreneurial firms to exploit these structures. In this context the concept of co-innovation competence is introduced and empirically analyzed. Results indicate that entrepreneurs follow a specific approach towards networking minimizing transaction costs taking an on-demand-based perspective of networking. In this case entrepreneurs may relate to regional innovation promotors and also reach beyond regional structures to explore suitable partners and exploit structural holes.

Beschreibung: This book is a collection of papers in which cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) is used to study science, technology and innovations. In the 16 chapters of the book an activity theoretical approach is developed through dialogue with the relevant theoretical approaches of science and technology studies, such as actor network theory, symbolic interactionism and Knorr-Cetinas's theory of objectual cultural practice. The book has three parts. The first one comprises empirical studies on creativity and change in research work and innovations. The cases studied include research groups in analytical chemistry, aerosol physics, biotechnology as well as innovations in medical technology by research-based firms. In making sense of the distributed creation, CHAT is put in dialogue with the systemic view of psychology of creativity, the systemic approach in history of technology as well as sociological theories of creativity. The second part compares systematically the similarities and differences between Deweyan pragmatism and CHAT, and shows how they can be used in a complementary way in empirical research. The third part evaluates actor network theory, constructivist conceptions of learning as well as the concept of routine largely used in organizational studies from the position of CHAT. In addition the concept 'object of activity' central in activity theory is discussed and elaborated in two chapters. The autor: Reijo Miettinen is Professor of Adult Education in the University of Helsinki and he was Vice director of the Center for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research in 1995-2007.

R&D and innovation policy is high on the political agenda in advanced economies. Market and system failures have been identified as reasons for private underinvestment in R&D and innovation and several policy instruments are in use to mitigate these failures. One central instrument of innovation policy are direct subsidies for firm R&D. By using direct project funding governments have the chance to target projects with high social returns and therefore, in theory, i. e. if policy makers can identify projects with high social returns, direct project funding can be an effective instrument to foster private sector R&D. However, there is no straightforward mechanism guaranteeing that subsidies are applied to projects which suffer from market or system failures. The allocation process of subsidies therefore appears to be central to the question of the effectiveness of subsidies. In spite of increasing scientific interest in innovation promotion policy, analysing allocation processes has been widely neglected in the mainstream literature. However, given the potential distortions which allocation processes can have it is worth addressing this issue in depth. This dissertation analyzes the allocation of R&D subsidies to firms theoretically and empirically using a unique data set from a special subsidy program from south-western Germany. Thereby this dissertation contributes to the growing literature on innovation promotion and is of interest for innovation researchers and innovation policy makers alike.
