L'Essai sur les origines des connaissances humaines, publie en 1746, constitue une piece majeure dans l'histoire de la reception francaise de Locke, dont Condillac revise la methode et les resultats. Il montre le role des signes dans les progres de l'esprit humain; il interroge les circonstances concretes qui determinent ce processus; il radicalise l'entreprise reductionniste, en decouvrant la genese, non plus seulement des connaissances, mais bien des facultes. Cette tentative illustre une these capitale sur la solidarite des operations de l'ame et du materiau (sensible) auquel elles s'appliquent, qui oriente egalement la lecture des grands systemes classiques: c'est a l'aune de cet empirisme rigoureux, appuye sur la methode analytique, que Condillac discute (et parfois utilise) Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz ou Malebranche. Ainsi l'auteur de l'Essai peut-il affirmer qu'il reforme, non seulement Locke, mais la metaphysique elle-meme, desormais limitee a la theorie de la connaissance: la prise de conscience des principes est toujours solidaire d'une reflexion de l'esprit sur son histoire.

Le transcendantalisme est ne d'un debat avec l'empirisme. Un tel usage critique de l'empirisme ouvre alors sur son interpretation metaphysique : l'empirisme est une metaphysique de l'experience, pour la double raison qu'il s'adosse a une ontologie de la representation et qu'il place la raison sous un horizon naturaliste, operatoire mais dogmatique. Invente contre - et donc avec - l'empirisme, le transcendantalisme apprend toutefois de lui une chose : l'a priori, cognitif ou moral, est acquis, de sorte que son evenement est soumis a certaines configurations empiriques. Se dessine ainsi la figure d'un transcendantal qui, loin de signifier une denegation de l'empiricite, fonde au contraire l'interet metaphysique decisif de cette derniere.

David Hume is the most influential precursor of modern empiri cism. By modern empiricism, I intend a belief that all cognitive conflicts can be resolved, in principle, by either appeal to matters offact, via scientific procedure, or by appeal to some sets of natural or conventional standards, whether linguistic, mathematical, aes thetic or political. This belief itself is a consequent of an old appre hension that all synthetic knowledge is based on experience, and that the rest can be reduced to a set of self-evident truths. In this broad sense, Modern Empiricism encompasses classes, such as Logi cal Empiricism, Logical Atomism and Philosophical Analysis, and unique individuals such as Russell and Moore. It excludes, thereby, the present day continental philosophies, such as Thomism, Exist entialism, and Dialectical Materialism. Modern empiricists, to be sure, are influenced by many other phi losophers. Locke, Berkeley, and Mill, among the classical empiri cists, and Leibniz and Kant, among the rationalists (the former especially on the logico-mathematical side) in one way or other are responsible for the appearance of empiricism in its new form. But none of them were as influential as Hume. This, by itself is not news. Weinberg, in his well-known book, An Examination of Logical Positivism, observes that: Many, if not all, of the principal doctrines of contemporary positivism derive from Hume.
