"Les empiristes franco-berlinois, au XVIIIe siècle, ne conçoivent pas seulement l'expérience comme l'origine des connaissances humaines, mais encore comme le principe de leur exposition systématique bien fondée : la voie de l'invention, supposée partir du sensible, acquiert le titre de méthode analytique. Cette décision entraîne deux difficultés majeures. 1) L'expérience primitive et principielle ne réside pas dans la passivité d'une sensation introuvable, mais dans le moment où l'esprit s'applique au matériau donné, c'est-à-dire dans la réflexion. Mais il faut savoir ce que cette réflexion, dont les empiristes introduisent le concept en philosophie, révèle de l'esprit qui la met en oeuvre et si elle est susceptible d'une explication réductionniste. 2) Les critiques que formule Leibniz et qui se feront entendre jusqu'au XXe siècle semblent définitives : les sciences mathématiques sont fondées sur des principes qui, de droit, ne sauraient rappeler leur origine présumée dans l'expérience sensible, faute de perdre la généralité et la nécessité qui déterminent la valeur de leurs concepts. Or cette objection est répétée en site empiriste et elle engendre une tension essentielle : on doit penser dans leur stricte originalité des principes qu'on devrait pourtant réduire au rang d'abstractions dérivées. L'Essai sur les origines des connaissances humaines, publie en 1746, constitue une piece majeure dans l'histoire de la reception francaise de Locke, dont Condillac revise la methode et les resultats. Il montre le role des signes dans les progres de l'esprit humain; il interroge les circonstances concretes qui determinent ce processus; il radicalise l'entreprise reductionniste, en decouvrant la genese, non plus seulement des connaissances, mais bien des facultes. Cette tentative illustre une these capitale sur la solidarite des operations de l'ame et du materiau (sensible) auquel elles s'appliquent, qui oriente egalement la lecture des grands systemes classiques: c'est a l'aune de cet empirisme rigoureux, appuye sur la methode analytique, que Condillac discute (et parfois utilise) Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz ou Malebranche. This volume explores the relationship between physics and metaphysics in Descartes’ philosophy. According to the standard account, Descartes modified the objects of metaphysics and physics and inverted the order in which these two disciplines were traditionally studied. This book challenges the standard account in which Descartes prioritizes metaphysics over physics. It does so by taking into consideration the historical reception of Descartes and the ways in which Descartes himself reacted to these receptions in his own lifetime. The book stresses the diversity of these receptions by taking into account not only Cartesianisms but also anti-Cartesianisms, and by showing how they retroactively highlighted different aspects of Descartes’ works and theoretical choices. The historical aspect of the volume is unique in that it not only analyzes different constructions of Descartes that emerged in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, but also reflects on how his work was first read by philosophers across Europe.
