De vroege Christenen gebruikten deze benaming oorspronkelijk om hun relatie met de God van het Oude Verbond aan te geven. Als bron voor de meeste hedendaagse vertalingen wordt de Novum Testamentum Graece gebruikt. In het Nieuwe Testament worden de daden en woorden van Jezus beschreven, die in het Nieuwe Testament de Messias (de Christus) genoemd wordt. Uit het geloof in hem is het Christendom voortgekomen. Verder staan er de vroege geschiedenis van de eerste christelijke gemeenschappen en de leer en prediking van de apostelen in beschreven. Het Nieuwe Testament vormt daarmee de voornaamste basis van het Christelijk geloof. Binnen dat geloof worden behalve de Bijbelteksten van het Oude Testament ook die van het Nieuwe Testament als het Woord van God d.w.z. geïnspireerd door God beschouwd. Orthodoxe Christenen beschouwen Het Oude en Nieuwe Testament letterlijk als "Het Woord van God".

De Brief van Aristeas is een geschrift uit de tweede eeuw voor het begin van onze jaartelling. Het is geschreven in het Grieks door een Jood uit de Joodse gemeenschap in Alexandrië in Egypte. Anders dan de naam doet vermoeden, gaat het vermoedelijk niet om een echte brief, maar is de briefstijl louter een literaire vorm. De Brief van Aristeas is vooral bekend geworden vanwege de legende die het bevat over het ontstaan van de Septuagint. De Egyptische koning Ptolemaeus II Philadelphus zou een vertaling van de Tenach in zijn groeiende bibliotheek willen hebben. Daartoe liet hij zeventig (of tweeën-zeventig) Joodse geleerden vanuit Jeruzalem naar Alexandrië komen, alwaar hij hen in aparte ruimten opsloot op het eiland Pharos, voor de kust van Alexandrië.

The Basil Society's China mission, one of the more successful Protestant missions in the nineteenth century, was distinguished by the fact that most of the initial proselytizing was conducted by Chinese converts in the interior rather than by Western missionaries in the treaty ports. Thus the first viable protestant communities were not only established by Chinese evangelists, they were established among an ethnic minority in south China, the Hakka people. The autobiographies of eight pioneer Chinese missionaries featured in this book offer an unusual opportunity to view village life and customs in Guangdong during the mid-nineteenth century by providing details on Hakka death and burial rituals, ancestor veneration, lineages and lineage feuds, geomancy, the status of Hakka women, widespread economic hardship, and civil disorder. They also illustrate the appeals of Christianity, the obstacles to conversion, and Chinese opposition to Christianity and Western missionaries. The authors' commentary addresses the issue of conversion, which was fueled by individual desire for solace and salvation, the building of a support community amid social chaos, and the possibility of social mobility through education. Despite an expanding role by Western missionaries, the Chinese origins, the rural interior locale, and the status of the Hakka as a disadvantaged minority contributed to successive generations of Christian families and to early progress toward an autonomous Hakka church.
