The Enchanted Castle is a children’s fantasy tale by Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, Five Children and It plus many Others. The Enchanted Castle a country estate in the West Country of England (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset) seen through the eyes of three children, Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathy, who discover it while exploring during their school holidays in the early 1900’s. The lake, groves and marble statues, with white towers and turrets in the distance, make a fairy-tale setting, and then in the middle of the maze in the rose garden, they find a sleeping fairy-tale princess. The "princess" tells them that the castle is full of magic, and they almost believe her. She shows them the treasures of the castle, including a magic ring she says is a ring of invisibility, but when it actually turns her invisible she panics and admits that she is the housekeeper's niece, Mabel, and she was just play-acting. The children soon find that the ring has other magical powers (as all magical rings do) such as making the "Ugly-Wugglies" (Guy Fawkes style dummies they had made to swell the audience at one of their play-performances) come to life. They eventually discover that the ring is actually granting their own wishes, and that the disturbing results stem from their failure to specify those wishes precisely. The Enchanted Castle was written for both children and adults. It combines descriptions of the imaginative play of children, with a magic more muted than in her major fantasies. =============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: enchanted castle, west country, children’s fantasy, tale, folklore, myths, legends, Jerry, Jimmy, Kathy, school holidays, lake, groves, marble statues, white, gleaming, towers, turrets, explore, fairy-tale setting, maze, fairy tale princess, sleeping, asleep, castle, palace, magic, magic ring, invisibility, housekeeper, niece, mabel, play-acting, magical powers, ugly wuggly, ugly-wuggly, ugly wugglies, guy fawkes, contemporary fantasy, fiction, imagination, railway children, five children and it, Castle hall, magnificent, deceiver, head first, entrance, enchanted garden, red clue, across the grass, straight, breathless, result, game, question, candle, silver frame, mirror, shadow, bread and butter, missy, policemen, go home, stone beast, silver, sea chest, landing stage, stagger, water butt, eliza, dishevelled, breathless, french peck, lovely, blue-black hair, limp hand, telling lies, strange procession, pointed, painted, paper face, peer, pieces, hats, raised, crowded place, statue, monster lizard, tremble, swim, celestial picnic, eager, alert, very keen, American,

A little bit of magic is a dangerous thing. This collection includes the first three novels in the thrilling Urban Fantasy series MIST RIDERS. LUNA (Book 1) Being born a witch has always been just a detail from my past, you know, like summer camp, or the time Timmy ate a bug, but now, thanks to one very pushy Immortal, a handful of mutant shifters, a psycho named Chaos and a nice guy (I think) named Emmet, my magic’s become a real pain in my ass. San Diego was a totally chill choice for college, until this whole moon-cycle madness was thrown in my lap (more like shoved in my face) and now I’m bumbling with basic spells, crash studying to go from zero to fierce in a matter of days. Only problem with this test is that it’s graded pass/fail where failure is death. I wouldn’t wish magic on anyone. It attracts all the wrong entities, the kind you can’t run from, the kind who always find you, the kind who know your dark secrets even before you do. WINTER (Book 2) When her ex-boyfriend goes missing, Luna will stop at nothing to find him—even if it means teaming with a Shadow Warrior, something she vowed never to do again. Desperate to know the truth, she must conspire with friend and foe alike to uncover a scheme that threatens not just the life of her ex-boyfriend, but promises to unleash Horror, a being so cataclysmic that all life as we know it hangs in the balance. From the Deep Down to the Sacred Vault and in every dark place between, Luna Mae goes on her wildest adventure yet, traveling farther than she ever thought she could, seeking out a lost friend while trying not to lose herself along the way. SILVER DUST (Book 3) When she returns home for Easter break to spend time with Gram, the mystery of her past draws Luna to an eccentric seer who reveals a secret that spins her life out of control. Before she can get answers from the Lord of the Demon Hounds, a series of attacks with a deadly silver dust threaten the lives of all magic kind including those she holds dearest. Battling through her darkest journeys yet, enduring clashes with Winter, Chaos, the Lord of the Soul Swallowers, an aggressive alpha shifter and the entire magic world, Luna realizes she has no choice but to make the ultimate sacrifice. “Superb, scrupulously researched . . . a comprehensive narrative for understanding the changing reception of Little Women.” —Gregory Eiselein, coeditor of The Louisa May Alcott Encyclopedia The hit Broadway show of 1912. The lost film of 1919. Katharine Hepburn, as Jo, sliding down a banister in George Cukor’s 1933 movie. Mark English’s shimmering 1967 illustrations. Jo—this time played by Sutton Foster—belting “I'll be / astonishing” in the 2004 Broadway musical flop. These are only some of the markers of the afterlife of Little Women. There’s also the nineteenth-century child who wrote, “If you do not ...make Laurie marry Beth, I will never read another of your books as long as I live.” Not to mention Miss Manners, a Little Women devotee, who announced that the book taught her an important life lesson: “Although it’s very nice to have two clean gloves, it’s even more important to have a little ink on your fingers.” In The Afterlife of Little Women, Beverly Lyon Clark, a leading authority on children’s literature, maps the reception of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel, first published in 1868. Clark divides her discussion into four historical periods. The first covers the novel’s publication and massive popularity in the late nineteenth century. In the second era—the first three decades of the twentieth century—the novel becomes a nostalgic icon of the domesticity of a previous century, while losing status among the literary and scholarly elite. In its mid-century afterlife, from 1930-1960, Little Women reaches a low in terms of its critical reputation but remains a well-known piece of Americana within popular culture. The book concludes with a long chapter on Little Women’s afterlife from the 1960s to the present, a period in which the reading of the book seems to decline, while scholarly attention expands dramatically and popular echoes continue to proliferate. Drawing on letters and library records as well as reviews, plays, operas, film and television adaptations, spinoff novels, translations, Alcott biographies, and illustrations, Clark demonstrates how the novel resonates with both conservative family values and progressive feminist ones. She grounds her story in criticism of children’s literature, book history, cultural studies, feminist criticism, and adaptation studies—in a book that is “fascinating, cover-to-cover, for the many readers of Little Women still out there, whether scholar or generally interested fan” (Studies in the Novel).

Fantasy writing, like literature in general, provides a powerful vehicle for challenging the status quo. Via symbolism, imagery and supernaturalism, fantasy constructs secondary-world narratives that both mirror and critique the political paradigms of our own world. This critical work explores the role of the portal in fantasy, investigating the ways in which magical nexus points and movement between worlds are used to illustrate real-world power dynamics, especially those impacting women and children. Through an examination of high and low fantasy, fairy tales, children's literature, the Gothic, and science fiction, the portal is identified as a living being, place or magical object of profound metaphorical and cultural significance.
